I vote for the Samsung LN-T4671f...yes over $2000 but you will avoid the temptation to upgrade later. Why spend $1000 when you will just want more later anyway? For around $2300 you can just step up from the beginning.
The same thought has been running through my head as well. I've done the whole upgrade-to-death game with various things like...uhhh...headphones Might want to skip all that nonsense this time around. It's a much bigger hassle moving gear like that on the classifieds...
I have a XBR4 Sony LCD. It configured properly and calibrated, it is considered the best of the LCD sets (just a bit better than the rival Samsung). It is expensive for all the bells and whistles but those bells are part of the enormous calibration menu that allows for personalization and viewing
different sources (sports w/o blur for example). I just spent Thanksgiving with my brother's Samsung plasma and it did not even seem HD after the Sony. Just my viewing opinion.
I printed that out and actually did measurements in stores and it's true as far as factory settings go.
Also, I would most definitly look at picture quality : price 1st, size second. Cause that 46" may seem fairly large in Best Buy, but as soon as that beast is sitting in your living room, it's gonna be HUGE. My sister only has a 32" and I could SWEAR it was bigger by memory, but when you're standing looking at TVs, they look smaller because of thier surroundings. It's called strategic merchandising.

mr_baseball: I guess times have changed and Head-fiers are getting laid like champs now. (Except I seriously doubt that's the case given all the anime and computer related threads around here..)
Only about 7% bigger in widescreen and way smaller in 4x3 mode (I don't like to stretch out 4x3 content). Since a lot of TV is still 4x3 that's still a concern, so I was figuring 46" is a good compromise of better HDTV/DVD but slightly smaller SD.
We got a 40", had some issues with it, ended up with a 58" that was too big for our room at the time. But a week later I swore I could never watch anything smaller.
I saw a Westinghouse 42" 1080p at Costco for (I think) $900 about 6 months ago, the only thing is it's a monitor - doesn't have a tv tuner built in. If you want digital HD cable in Canada, you have to rent the external box anyway, so I don't think that really matters much, at least for us.
I don't really have a preference of plasma vs. LCD, though since I do plan occasional (frequent?) PC use the no burn-in aspect of LCD's would be nice.
Thanks for all the help guys, but considering that I'll be out a couple grand with Thanksgiving & Christmas travel, gifts, etc. I'm going to hold off for a while. I just got back in the black in October after paying off my April wedding...it's probably best I refill the savings a bit before I start blowing money again.
And knowing myself, waiting until I can comfortably drop $2000-3000 for a higher end model will be better in the long run because...

I would never spend less than $3000 for a display at the size. Unfortunately, I am plagued with the mentality of always buying the best.
If I could buy another display, which probably won't happen for another two years since I already bought one last year, I'll probably get a 60" 1080p Pioneer Plasma. Sure it costs a lot but I fell in love with their displays.
