My sweet spot is a 46" TV, not overly huge but it still feels big. From a visit to Best Buy 42" is decent as well, but I wouldn't go smaller than that, but I'd much rather skew toward the 46" range rather than 42".
My budget is, "The cheapest possible set that's still pretty decent." I don't need a videophile orgasmatron screen, but I'm willing to settle for a set that's good enough, i.e. no terrible color issues or anything like that, but I can deal with it being less than color-calibrated perfection.
PC inputs are an absolute must. Of course HDMI / Component and all that is needed as well, but I don't even think they make a non-HDMI set nowadays so I don't know if that's even worth mentioning
The Sharp models that were on sale last week at Circuit City are pretty good for the price. I think they were both a little over a grand off on the 46" and 52" models. My family just got the 42" recently through my employee accommodations for about $900 w/tax and shipping. I followed settings on AVS, and the picture is absolutely stunning with my Toshiba HDA2. I bet if I had an XBR beside it, I can nitpick, but at the price, it does everything I want it to do.

I'll second the Sharp sets. I'm only on a smaller 720p/1080i set, but the new models are on display near my work and I've been drooling over them all week. The Aquos line has really set the bar for price/performance.
I will note, however, that you shouldn't scoff at calibration. When you calibrate even the lower-end models, the differences in picture quality often become negligible if you don't have a particularly discerning eye. Some of the lower-end store brand models are a definite exception.
I'm much like you (not a videophile, but want as good as I can get without scrutinizing) and the biggest things I look for are contrast and refresh rates. So long as the colours are rich and the movement and edges are crisp, I'm happy. Thankfully, this should give you a lot of options.
yea sharp is probably the best of the normal lcds, the sony bravia can compete but its such a ripoff. You missed a lot of black friday deals though to be honest. Most of them weren't amazing deals but they were very good.
Wrong, it's worth every penny if you have it to spend. If not, Samsung is another good alternative.
actually its 100% correct(for me) because its my opinion, i guess I should add imo to calling something a ripoff though. Review wise most people like both the Sharp and the Sony 1080p lcds (I know sharps non 1080p aquos arent that great), if they are both considered good/comparable and one cost a lot more I call that a ripoff. Besides if you have tons of money to piss away then what WOULD BE considered a ripoff?
btw I've checked out both in person and I don't think the bravia is better and it cost more..., they both were on crappy factory settings tho.
I vote for the Samsung LN-T4671f...yes over $2000 but you will avoid the temptation to upgrade later. Why spend $1000 when you will just want more later anyway? For around $2300 you can just step up from the beginning.

HP Pavillion M8000n -> Zu ASH Digital Cable -> Cambridge Audio Azur 740C (upconverting DAC) Or the 740C as CDP -> Zu GEDE interconnect Cable -> Audio Technica AT-HA5000 -> Audio Technica ATH-W5000
if they are both considered good/comparable and one cost a lot more I call that a ripoff. Besides if you have tons of money to piss away then what WOULD BE considered a ripoff?
I only wish you had your head-fi equipment in your profile. I bet I could draw an analogy. I'll try it this way...
I own a Hornet. I use it with a $75 interconnect instead of using my ipod's headphone jack. Why? Because I think it sounds enough better to justify the investment. Most other sane people would disagree, but many head-fiers would agree. Is my Hornet a ripoff? It cost $450 with interconnect vs. $0 to achieve a "comparable" result. Many people think the ipod headphone jack sounds "good" with stock earbuds.
I think it is a matter of diminishing returns. I can tell the difference between a Bravia and a Sharp. The better performance is worth the difference in price to me. YMMV, but it is quite common around here for people to buy below their own standards and upgrade shortly thereafter when they discover something better. I am just giving the OP another opinion to perhaps save him/her from this fate.
