I've also really been enjoying for the past while the comp World Psychedelic Classics 3-Love's A Real Thing: The Fuzzy, Funky Sounds of West Africa. It came out this year, but it's older stuff. It's actually on Stone's Throw, surprisingly.

In this vein, I don't think anyone has mentioned King Sunny Ade.

Wow, now it is getting good. Fela Kuti is amazing! I only have The Best Best of Fela Kuti 2-CD collection from 2000 on MCA and the music does deserve the AMG 5-star rating it gets, but for some reason they compressed the crap out of it which gives the music a hard edge and makes it less fun to listen. And this is music that celebrates fun, so quashing the dynamics is just stupid mastering from Universal. Even with the bad sound, it's still essential stuff, but I'd probably look for older pressings next time, maybe some LPs. This one clocks in at close to the maximum of 158 minutes and I love every jazz-filled minute from this legendary African soulman, but it's a hard listen sometimes.
But I have some classic King Sunny Ade on vinyl, as it should be heard, and it's great. Get dancing!

[quote=antiant]yeah let's have more of "world music" discussions i agree...i noticed under your profile that you have celtic, electronica and world as musical preferences, may i make a suggestion (if you don't have this album already) check out:
Bill Laswell's - Emerald Aether: Shape Shifting/Reconstructions of Irish Music I LOVE IT and it's very well done i think you will enjoy it, not to mention it has every musical preference you like in this album
My wallet thanks you so much antiant... :allteeth:
As it turns out I have not come across that one (where have I been!!!) and also have an order lined up to fire off to cduniverse so will include it sharpish. Thanks again.
Recommended :
Alabina (sometime duet with Gipsy Kings, yeah it's Arabian music, the best I've ever heard)
Any recording from John McLaughlin with it's supergroup Shakti (??? can't remember well, yeah it's Indian music collaboration with Jazz)
Edit: plus Mustafa Sandal from Turkey (try to listen to the track called Tarkan/Kiss actual version, the best dance music on earth, IMHO) & Bombay Vikings (dance)
