Default Requesting some Dvorak chamber.

Looking specifically for the following:
String Sextet in A, Op.48
String Quintet in E flat Op.97
String Quintet in A minor, Op.1
String Quintet in G, Op.77

I don't like the recording I currently have, but I find the songs very emotional and enchanting to listen to.
Thanks for looking.

Schalldämpfer,

Which recording do you have? I wouldn't want to recommend it to you!

Meanwhile I'm going to thumb through my collection and see what I have for those pieces.

For the Quintets, I have these:

The first recording is not, afaik oop. Although it's not listed by Amazon, you should be able to find it at other vendors. The second by L'Archibudelli of the Old and New World Quintets is oop here, but is still available at HMV Japan. Be warned, the L'Archibudelli recording is HIP -- no vibrato and gut strings so it sounds very different from what we are used to. I love the sound, but some of my friends find it a bit off-putting.

Now, on to the Sextet.

So far, I have the Sarah Chang recording of the Sextet (at bmg music clubs) and the Nash Ensemble. I'm hoping to find a nice HIP version but so far, no luck. I am also hoping to find the Smetana quartet's recording of either the quintets or sextet but that is so far unavailable.

hiya

I believe that BIS has an excellent collection, look up the following if you are interested. BIS-LP-5, 25,26,28.35,64,65 and 245(which I am listening to now - Cello Concerto b minor Op.104, Allegro moderato. See if you can get the Gothenburg Symph recordings - v nice.

cheers

I don't know what you have, but I have to say that I've been thrilled with the quality of the chamber recordings of Dvorak on Naxos. Their Brahms, Schumann, and Beethoven have also been wonderful, despite the low prices.

Whooo! Hearty thanks! Can't wait to check them all out!

Edit: Augh... they're all so hard to find... I found the BIS recordings online, but not sure where to buy them.

Bis recordings are widely available at most amazon websites, hmv websites, jpc.de and also at other sites such as musicabona.com and germanmusicexpress.com. There should be no trouble finding any of these things.

Musicabona usually has a great selection of Czech music of all types and styles, especially Dvorak.

Hmmm, it is worth tracking down, there was a specialist shop called "gramaphone records" in Perth that recommended the BIS Cello Concerto op 104 as one of the better recordings.

Here is a number to try, sorry no email as is was printed in 1984 in West Germany!

Grammofon AB BIS
Tel Stokholm (08) (int +46) 755 41 00

There should be BIS agents all over the world.

Best of Luck

My favorite Dvorak chamber music is the haunting Piano Quintet Op.81 in A major. The recording that introduced it to me, and is still my favorite, is easily obtainable and inexpensive as it's on the budget Arte Nova label.

The performers are the very young ARCUS Ensemble.

This is one of those discs that's so beautiful, it's hard to understand why anyone wouldn't have it. I urge you to discover it.
