Pink Floyd cd - poor audio quality, any advice?
Short story: I bought Wish You Were Here through an online shop.
The cd has terrible distortion/clipping. This is especially bad on "Shine on vol. 1" from the point where the drums kick in, gradually getting worse as the guitar builds up to the first lyrics.
I played the cd on my Denon/Dali stereo using Sennheiser PX100 and Yuin PK2 head/earphones. Tested both amped and straight out of the cd player. Also compressed to mp3 and tested on my Sony 829 player.
The equipment is not top-notch but I never hear distortion or clipping on other cd's.
I assume I have the remastered version of the cd, once they are remastered that tends to be the new standard copy.
Last I heard it was years ago, most likely not the remastered copy, I remember it had great sound quality.
Does anyone else have this problem?
Any ideas where i can buy the non-remastered copy online?

You bought a cd online, or you bought it and downloaded from a service like itunes?

I bought the cd at cd-wow.com where I get most of my cd's:
CD WOW! - PINK FLOYD Wish You Were Here
I never buy mp3's they are too poor quality. Always rip with EAC in Lame V2 or V0

Open the file in Audacity, zoom in where it sounds distorted. See if there's clipping in the file.

It is possible that your system has something to do with it. I own some PF CD's and one them Delicate Sound Of Thunder ( live 2 CD's ). And to tell you the true, before Zana Deux and NAD C542 CDP were part of my system it didn't sound at all, simply terrible, but now it is another story.

No, better, but still on the low quality. Most CD's are simply digital BS and not that much musicians are really interesting in their quality after all. Another thing is, they do not have a position to change that either. There are some standards, for a mass consumer, which big record labels are using to make a buck. And the funny thing is, its working. Right now I can easy sell 30%, if not more, of my CD collection because of that.

Sorry for my simplicity, but how can I check this, using my Laptop I mean. Or do I need some extra software?

I don't use a service like iTunes. I purchase the CD, then transfer off the CD.
If you go to "get info" or something like that, you can view the bitrate. Most of my songs are 1411kbps, unlike the standard 320kbps that comes from online.
If you are really concerned, the best way is to purchase the CD and transfer from CD to iPod or whatever.

Just like in the old vinyl days, a CD can sound terrible as LP's did because of a bad pressing.
When I buy a CD with distorted sound, I return it to the shop where I bought it, and demand a new one.
I think you should do the same. It has nothing to do with your equipment. It's a manufactory fault.

Oh, do you have a "special edition" Pink Floyd stuff? It's a major difference over the "normal" Pink Floyd CD's that are readily available.

Just right click on the song, hit properties, then hit details. It will show the bit rate for you.
