"Lost" Beach Boys classic "Smile" to see release
It drove him cuckoo and almost broke up the band, it was intended as the sequel to Pet Sounds, designed to squash those pesky Beatles once and for all--it's Brian Wilson's lost masterpiece "Smile" (his "teenage symphony to God") and it looks like it's been completed by its authors Wilson and Van Dyke Parks after years of swearing he'd never touch it again. Wilson is currently touring this material in Europe, I was expecting another live album of it, but this will be the actual recordings from '67.
Can't wait!

wow... that's fantastic news.
i've been listening to a smile bootleg for years... i love this album... rich, symphonic psychedelic experimentation. better than pet sounds.
i can't wait to hear how it sounds once it's finished and remastered... i really hope they do a good job: i'm not convinced that brian wilson is all there these days.
is it going to be released on capitol? i always thought the reason it had never come out is that the label quashed it and wouldn't release the master tapes.
edit: ah ha... just read the article... it's all so clear now. and i'm even more excited!

I dunno, I tend to think that if Brian had ever been "all there", we wouldn't have all the magical music he's given us over the years...

Maybe Paul (and Ringo) will have to top Brian when "Smile" is released.

Yeah, I'll believe it when I see it and hold it in my own hands. I'm not sure that report really says it will be released anytime soon. It's true that Brian and Parks and Wondermints' keyboardist Darian Sahanaja "finished" it after getting the tapes from the vaults, but that was for the current tour. I don't think they really "finished" it for a release. Hope I'm wrong, though. I do have a version that matches pretty close to what they've been performing in London, albeit not at full CD quality so I'd still be very interested in getting a new "official" version. Just seems that there are some obstacles to overcome (Mike Love? Capitol?) before that happens and don't really see that happening so soon. Boots from the shows are already on the web, though. And they were supposedly filming the London shows for a DVD release. And most of it is already available in one form or another. Still, wouldn't it be nice :-)
I did post a Brian Wilson interview last month that talked some about it at http://forums.audioreview.com/showthread.php?t=1728

OMG!!!!! I hope it happens! He is still a HUGE talent. And; in my eyes, the greatest American 'Pop' (or otherwise) songwriter that has ever lived.
BRIAN WILSON is the Man!!!!
Hey!!! Who all has "Brian Wilson 'Live' at the Roxy Theatre"?
Get it, if you can find it. I have an autographed copy of it. It's incredible (to say the least). Recorded in 2000.
