RIAA can go ****** themselves!
I don't see why we should not be allowed to make a digital copy of an audio CD that we have paid for.

If I buy an album in another country, then bring it stateside and import it. Is it governed by the RIAA then?

I dont really see how the RIAA could keep tabs on people's personal activities relating to their optical and magnetic drives. I'd counter sue them for massive privacy invasion.
Of course you could always use a computer that has no internet connection to do your ripping, if it comes to that.
The joke is on them if they sue me; they already get all my money. And any jail time would more $ losses, in that I would stop buying CDs.

If they wanted to the RIAA could just go down the list of people in the phonebooks and sue everybody because few people haven't ripped a CD in their lives...

I wonder how long it's going to be before these rabid goons start going after me for all the cassette tape mixes I made in high school.
Why don't they understand that those tapes helped me and others choose music to *BUY*??
...and frankly, after making my first trip to a record store in years and facing the ridiculous prices, crap choice, worse recordings and remasters...who can blame a downloader?

Nice to see this making the news at last. These sorts of things are all-too-often restricted to forums like Head-Fi and P2P sites.

Yah, one of the first things I can remember doing as a child was "helping" my father make me cassette tape copies of all of his Beatles and Beach Boys records for my use, influencing my love of music to this day. We were such bad people...
This is the worst step in the "fight" so far.
I visited my brother's college campus recently and all over the dorms and union they have the posters warning students they will be expelled and prosecuted if they touch illegally downloaded music. Everything's wireless and apparently my brother is so scared of the consequences and recent knee-jerk reactions on campus that he won't store any music on his laptop and won't visit music-related sites.
I'd like to register my disgust.
