Default NAD Problem

I've discovered that my NAD 542 is giving me false HDCD readings. I'm going to post about it on the Source Forum because the unit's brand new.

I wanted to let this thread know because I posted some HDCD titles earlier, and I'm not sure they qualify.

Sorry,

BW

Here's an interesting one - Madonna Greatest Hits Volume 2, the HDCD light comes on my NAD 541i but only for around 2 or 3 of the songs.

Here's one from my fave female artist. Jill Sobule - I Never Learned To Swim. This is her 90-00 compilation CD. Even on my non-HDCD player, this CD sounds way better than same songs from her earlier CDs.

I've noticed that too. I suspect most artists concerned enough with sound quality to use HDCD are probably careful to get a good recording in the first place.

Default I didn't see these mentioned.

I just found these at WalMart yesterday.
Warner Remaster series.
Van Halen - 1984
Van Halen - Women and Children First.
They are marked HDCD on the label and on the disc. Which is actually the only reason I bought both of them. These were the only two in the store. They are dated 2000 and HDCD is noted as a trademark of Pacific Microsonics.
And they were only $11.98 each.

All of the Mike Oldfield's early albums (from the Virgin era) are remastered in HDCD. The sound quality is superb with great dynamic range (even though they were remastered in year 2000!). All of them are labeled with the HDCD logo.

I don't know if you will include them in the list (much of them!), but here they are:

Mike Oldfield: Tubular Bells (1973)
Mike Oldfield: Hergest Ridge (1974)
Mike Oldfield: The Orchestral Tubular Bells (1975)
Mike Oldfield: Ommadawn (1975)
Mike Oldfield: Incantations (1978)
Mike Oldfield: Exposed (1979)
Mike Oldfield: Platinum (1979)
Mike Oldfield: QE2 (1980)
Mike Oldfield: Five Miles Out (1982)
Mike Oldfield: Crises (1983)
Mike Oldfield: Discovery (1984)
Mike Oldfield: The Killing Fields (soundtrack) (1984)
Mike Oldfield: Islands (1987)
Mike Oldfield: Earth Moving (1989)
Mike Oldfield: Amarok (1990)
Mike Oldfield: Heaven's Open (1991)

Love this list, keep em coming.

My latest is Roxy Music: Manifesto.

In fact, while picking this up I noticed that "every" Roxy Music cd I picked up was HDCD... wish I could remember all there names. It didn't make my choice harder as Manifesto was always a favourite.

Cheers,

TonyAAA

Just a warning about Sigur Rós: () -- not all copies are HDCD (I've heard one of each, so I know some are, and some are not). Don't know how to tell the difference, other than the HDCD copies has a greyish outer slip jacket, whereas the non-HDCD copy has a more white outer slip jacket.

A couple of others: November's Doom, To Welcome the Fade
The Nine, Native Anger
The entire Yes (Japanese versions only), King Crimson (EG stuff), and Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry catalogs. And Mike Oldfield, but someone already listed him out special.

Probably because it's expensive. What's the point in going up marginally in quality (redbook CD -> HDCD) when one is going up a couple of notches (CD -> DVD-A). Also, Wayne is much more fond of the novelty of surround sound than he is of fidelity, so he decided to go that route.

There were several artists that went HDCD, and then went otherwise (Chris Isaak, The Nine, and others come to mind).

The Nylons - Perfect Fit is labeled as an HDCD but doesn't seem to be.

Country:
Lee Ann Womack - I Hope You Dance
Lee Ann Womack - Something Worth Leaving Behind
Lee Ann Womack - Greatest Hits (not labeled on the jewel case)
Trisha Yearwood - Songbook
