Foo Fighters - In Your Honor

Anyone hear it yet? Rolling Stone only gave it two stars so I'm curious as to what it sounds like. The user reviews on Amazon were pretty favorable except for the people who gave it one star because of the copy protection.

I'm curious too, but haven't heard it yet -- I've only listned to the samples on Amazon. There seems to be a big split in style between the first and second CD. After listening to the samples, I'd like to hear more about it, but I was not moved to buy it.

I've only listened to it once through, so I can only give some general first impressions.

The first disc is 10 straight up rock songs. Pretty much what I think you'd expect from the Fighters. Loud, full of distorted guitars, and a lot of catchy hooks. I find myself subconciously tapping my foot along and nodding my head to most if not all of these. The only tracks that really stood out on first listen were the opener/title track "In Your Honor" and "End over End." I didn't notice any real stinkers, so it's basically some solid rockers with the potential for a stand out track or two. It might be a little harder than previous Foo Fighter stuff.

The second disc is 10 accoustic songs. For the most part these are very nice sounding, smooth, if not forgetable songs. Grohl has a very smooth, pleasant voice, but it lacks a little bit of emotion so the songs all start to sound a bit similar with the exception of "Virginia Moon" and "Cold Day in the Sun" (which is probably my favorite track on this one). Not that the songs are bad, they're pretty good overall, just not amazing and maybe a little too polished. For some reason (and probably unfairly) I keep thinking of this compared to Beck's Sea Change (an outstanding album), and it just can't compete.

If you're a fan of the Foo Fighters I think you will like this disc. If you aren't a fan, this disc probably won't make you one, although this is a very accessible album overall. I'll agree with a lot of what I've read in that there probably is a really good 10 song album in this disc, but a lot of songs become filler with the double disc release. Considering it sells at basically the same price as a single disc, I can't really complain too much about the length of the album. Bottom line, it's a very solid straight up rock album (which the Foo do about as well as anyone) and a solid accoustic album (which the Foo do OK, but plenty of people do better) all in one package.

I'd hoped there were more people who had tried out this album. Oh well. I finally got a chance to spin this album and really listen to it at work last night. First album, I thought it was good, in general. The second album (or disc) was pretty good. General consensus, no? Now, I don't have the album with me, so I can't give spcific likes/dislikes right now, but one thing that really bothered me. The first disc is recorded HORRIBLY. The volume is very low, seemingly veiled. Sounds bad. A big gripe is on the song they released, track 3, I believe. At the 1:43.5 mark, there is an OBVIOUS point where they spliced together two different takes. The percussive element is shifted a few feet to the left in the image, and it REALLY disctracts from the song, and the album in general. I don't think I'll be able to listen to this with headphones very much, if at all. On my HT setup, it wasn't that bad, but then again, my HT isn't up to my headphones. Just my 2cents...

I completely agree with that. A friend brought the album over for a listen, and, not considering the musical content, it really isn't well recorded. The volume does have issues, like mentioned before, and it all just seemed sort of a tad messy for me.

Now the CD does have good songs on it, also the acoustic side isn't bad at all, nothing I could listen to all day though (and not because of the bad recording).

i like disc 1, so-so for the acoustic; i really dont listento much acoustic to begin w/

mixing could have been done better, i agree ; not as bad as the Corgan solo, where the vocals are drowned by the music

Finally able to spin this after setting around since Tuesday......great comeback for FF and much better than mediocre previous album. Disc 1 is as good as anything they have done, very solid mainstream rocker. By putting acoustic tracks on disc 2 they save me the trouble of having to skip them and can just play disc 1 straight through

I haven't even listened to the acoustic part. I absolutely hate that fake-o acoustic mumbo that so many bands are churning out for those fanatical girly-acoustic fangirls whatever...

anyway, the first cd is pretty decent, it's not getting much rotation in my player but then again, I'm a metal man. Anyway, I got it for 10 bucks and I think it's good for that amount, at 8 dollars it'd be great but because of the copy protection I'd be like...bleh at 14 bucks...no thanks. At least you can defeat this...sonicstage doesn't even recognize Acceptance's cd from columbia wtf...
