Default Bob Dylan in Concert!!

So this upcoming tuesday a couple of friends and I are going to see Bob Dylan in our small home town of Santa Rosa!

When I first heard that Dylan was going to be performing at our county fairgrounds, in the building where every year the fair hosts its 'flower show' struck me as a little odd... but i hopped online and checked when the tickets went on sale. My friends and I gathered $55 each and bought tickets the next day.

I'm a little disappointed that he is not playing in a better venue, seeing as the acoustics in the 'Grace Pavilion' are not that great, however I am still stoked!

Just thought I'd share my enthusiasm with all of you! It just amazes me how I, a sixteen-year-old boy from Northern California, am going to be able to see one of the, IMO, most influencial artists and one of the greatest lyricists in history. A man who released his first album only three years after my dad was born... and I get to attend one of his performances! God I'm excited!!

Good for you...I unlike most love his recent concerts. Had the chance to see him last summer again at Lehigh University. The music (band) is top shelf! Now, Bob on the other hand is a little tough to understand...and doesn't move very much.

Highest recommendation is to go out and get both Time Out Of Mind and Love and Theft if you don't own them already...80 to 90% of his sets are off of these albums. The he ususally wraps up with the classics.

One other thought is to watch Chronicles...the recent PBS broadcast...it will draw you deeper into him.

I'm stoked for you!

80-90% is a bit of an exaggeration, probably more like 35-40%.

Also, Chronicles is the name of his autobiography; No Direction Home is the name of the Scorsese PBS special.

Yeah, I've definitely been brushing up on the more recent Dylan albums as of late. I really enjoy all of his stuff, from classics to the more recent.

I have yet to watch the PBS series on him though, although I do have it recorded... maybe Ill watch it tonight.

I saw him almost two years ago at a smallish venue in Detroit. The SHOW was great, but if you're expecting a stellar vocal performance, you're going to be VERY disappointed. The man can't sing to save his life any more!!

Again, the show will be great...enjoy and let us know how it goes.

So i just got back from the concert.. it was awesome!!
Sure the acoustics and sound system weren't that good, and sure he doesnt have the voice that he used to, but come on... its BOB DYLAN! Even if his voice was pretty terrible, he can still hit that perfect 'Bob Dylan' sound on "babe" or "feel" that just sends shivers down your spine.

Im pretty tired right now so I'm gonna go to sleep... but just thought i would chime in and tell you all how it was.

Cool, glad you had a great time.

FWIW, I think everyone likes to complain about Dylan's voice being shot, but I like it better than any of his "other" voices over the years. I mean, after all, the beauty of his voice has always been the beauty of emotional expression, not the beauty of soothing prettiness. His voice is more expressive now than ever, therefore, I find it more beautiful than ever. When Bob growls, you can feel the roads he's been down. The crags in his voice are a topographic map of America.

Mark

Yeah, I totally agree. That's a great way of putting it. Thanks Mark.

I saw him a couple of years ago with The Dead in an arena and it was horrible. I am sure the poor acoustics of the arena played a role. However, The Dead sounded fine. It was virtually impossible to make out what Dylan was singing.

I've seen Dylan 6 times over the last 15 years. It's been a mixed bag. But when he's on, he is amazing. I guess the best show I saw was at the Beacon in NYC years ago when he was touring with a (restrained) G.E. Smith. The band rocked, but then Dylan shooed them off the stage and went solo for a while and blew everyone's mind.
