Default 3 Live Zappa picks

post mothers Zappa

1) Roxy & Elsewhere (all the classics live w/ George Duke)

2) The Best Band You've Never Heard in Your Life
(The Torture Never Stops part II has some of the most mindblowing guitar noodling you'll ever hear!)

3) Zappa in New York (Titties & Beer, Illinois Enema Bandit, etc...)

Make A Jazz Noise Here
Zappa in New York
You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 2

I found it easy to pick three, but I think that it would be very difficult to pick, say, the next five.

Zappa/Wazoo - Just released from the Grand Wazoo tour
Imaginary Diseases
Shut Up and Play Your Guitar

This list is just to not duplicate what's already listed. You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol. 2 and Roxy and Elsewhere might also make my list

Most of his albums are at least half live, so IMO, pick your favorite 3 albums

My two faves, the awesome 1988 band and fantastic live recordings...

1) Make A Jazz Noise Here
2) The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life

No. 3 could be a lot of things, Roxy, YCDTOSA.V2 qualify, among others.

"Good night Austin, Texas, wherever you are!"

That could make my list as well

I saw him in concert 3 or 4 times a year from 78 on, except the 88 tour. I was traveling when the tour was announced and tickets went on sale and none of my friends thought to buy me a ticket. Of course most of my friends barely had enough money to buy themselves tickets.

Really? Thing-fish is a concert recording? That doesn't sound possible! It's a while since I've heard it, what with its not being my favourite Zappa album, but for a start there's no crowd noise ...

In any case, once you've got the version of "Torture" from YCDTOSA#1 there's not much reason to go for Thing-Fish, surely?
