Sorry Dave -- we likely won't have anything close to a final price for the new DAC until early 2009 or thereabouts .... ... Thanks so very much for the patience!

Okay, this is on my list. An upgrade worth waiting for. Jorge, try to keep it nicely <= $1,000. Pretty please...!

FWIW, we did our first pass on cost estimates and it looks like the product will list somewhat over the $1k mark.
Also, I've had one on my desk for a few days now and it rocks. Couple of bugs yet, but it's very clean.

Well, in deference to your wishes I kept my mouth shut about this. I may now fully let loose my excitement.

Tyll is, er, uncharacteristically understated -- Our HeadRoom audio engineer in charge of the design said the new DAC measurement specs were "so much better than anything we've seen before, its actually scary"
It's way beyond merely "rockin"! ... The final tweaks are underway. YAY!
Cheers,
Jorge

You warn us that it will be expensive. Then you inform us that it's better than anything you've seen before.
You guys must get laid a lot because it's a very seductive pitch.
It sounds great. This is the DAC I've been waiting for. I'm in! At least we have a half year to save for this.

Maybe for you they will. You've got one sitting on your desk, and we're the ones saving up.

It's actually sitting on Tyll's desk (... well, 'til one of us grabs it when he's away & steals it for a few hrs!) -- but your point well-taken.
I'll hazard to add the "final" version remains yet to be heard!
Cheers,
Jorge

Will there be a desktop max dac that is unbalanced, or is that called the ultra micro dac?

Looks like it will have both balanced and unbalanced.

Yep, which is all upside.
My use will be unbalanced - for now. But when you're spending that dough for top of line it sure is nice to have the upgrade path.
