Actually, that's pretty much what I pegged them at. They're pretty feature rich when you look at them closely and built to last. Clearly they're not for everyone but they did call it the Audiophile desktop.

I was really looking forward to getting them but the price does put them out of reach for me.
They do look amazingly well constructed. All I really want is a simple solid desktop riser that doesn't look DIY. AV123 is prototyping a desktop stand for their X-LS speakers which will probably be more within reach for most people.

On the one hand, that is pretty damn expensive for a pair of speaker stands, but then when you look at them, you have to admit, they are pretty "over engineered" (in a good way!).
I guess it just depends how much you value your desk space and headroom kit...

I was really hoping for $399, and I think we'll be able to lower the price over time. The problem is the materials we're using, the bolt for the headphone hanger alone is $10 our cost, and the rubber covering is the 3M Bumpon material and it's amazingly expensive. In the end we're actually taking a modestly lower than normal margin on the darn things as it is at $499.
My hope is that they do fairly well and we can work on getting them built in higher quantities and tweak some of the cost out of the materials, but in the end, I want to sell what I'd like on my desk. This biz is an audiophile adventure, and sadly that means that many things get priced out of peoples reach. Sorry guys, I've got expensive taste.
Like I've said previously, if you want something that works and is cheal, go to your local big box home furnishing store and look at their wall cubes, they'll do the trick for many of you just fine.
Also, the main Desktop Audiophile products page can now be found here.

A bit steep, but your point is well taken Tyll; you get what you pay for. And you're also paying for HR's customer service, which means something these days when other manufacturers could care less.
One thing, though, would you consider offering the stands individually instead of pairs only?

By the time you are spending $900 on the amp, $649 (min) on the Desktop pre/headphone amp, another $600 to $1200 for decent bookshelf speakers, the $500 for the stands while pricey is not out of reach. If they were $300, people probably wouldn't complain, so all your adding is another $200 to $2500 or $3100, depending on the speakers you choose. This is supposed to be a highend desktop system. I can't wait to hear this on Saturday.

So, I looked around the web page and could not see anything regarding the dimensions. Could someone either post the dimensions or a specification drawing with dimensions? Thanks.

Using the information that we have in the pictures, namely that a standard desktop sized enclosure will fit between the stand you can deduce a bit about the size of the support platform at the top. The desktop series are 6-1/4" x 6-1/4" so I'm going to guess you've got about an 8" square contact patch at the top to rest the speaker on. Sounds small at first until you remember that it both allows for bolting the speaker down and also is coated with the Bumpon material which will provide more traction for larger speakers at angles.
The Harbeth's, for reference, are 12" x 7.5" (roughly) and I'm sure they'll sit comfortably on the stands.
