Wow I just tested D2000s and I'm really impressed.
However - although very good out of all the sealed cans I've heard, I'd say they're still a touch "behind" in that they display evident "boxy-ness" in the lower frequencies. Don't get me wrong - they're worth every penny and better than most to my ears - but I bet I could still tell they're closed cans in a blind test.
Their sound a lot like 650's to me - so I think I'll go that route instead - but the D2000s are still super good sounding headphones in my books.

D5000s are already out of stock? That's quite fast.

Everyone else you see out there --including all Amazon and most other online shops -- are completely NOT AUTHORIZED according to our own Denon USA representatives. That means no free warranty service work if needed (they'll charge you for it as if its an out-of-warranty item --that can get pricey quickly!) PLUS your non-dealer purchased headphone goes to the back of the repair queu superceded by all incoming 'Denon dealer-purchased' warranty work..

As an authorized dealer, we are compelled by our vendor agreement to maintain Denon msrp minimums and fully comply with their advertised price restrictions -- which non-authorized Denon vendors do not.

I know it hurts HeadRoom not to be able to compete directly with Amazon and eBay; we're told Denon is in-process with attempting to remove product from all non-authorized dealers to the best of their corporate ability. That's certainly an uphill battle many other audio manufacturers have faced before with varying degrees of success... and we've frequently been caught in the middle of it!

HeadRoom always tries to be competitive when & where we possibly can -- in the case of Denon headphones, please feel free to give us a call and we'll see what we can do to price-match other fully authorized Denon vendors!

CHEERS,

Jorge
HR Sales & Product Manager

Jorge,

Congratulations on bringing Denon to your line-up! The D5000 are the best cans on the market right now, especially when modded.

But to set the record straight, Amazon.com most certainly is an authorized dealer for Denon. I wouldn't have bought them from Amazon.com if they weren't. Take a look at the Denon authorized E-tailers page:

Denon USA | Authorized Online E-Tailers

Amazon is authorized only for their audio products and limited selection items, whereas the companies listed on the top of that page are authorized for audio and video. And Amazon also offers an extended warranty plan which I purchased for them, which is better than the factory warranty anyway.

So if Amazon is allowed to advertise those prices, you should certainly be able to as well since you are now an authorized online e-tailer for Denon. And I imagine they will put your logo on their page. And of course if you are able to beat their price you will wind up getting most everyone's business from Head-Fi that is in the market for a D5000.

I assume this has been asked elsewhere, but how big are the differences between the 2000 and the 5000?

Quite small. The D5000 sounds more refined in the upper frequencies but overall frequency balance is very similiar.

The differences seem small when used on a portable source but when you use a good home amp, the differences are quite large. The cable on the D5000 makes much more of an impact than the differences between wood and plastic earcups. They are low impedance cans, yes, and don't require much power to make them function.... but if you want them to work well you need to drive them with a good amount of clean current, way more than a portable amp or source will provide.

But also the materials used inside the housing are different. Denon also needs to adjust the earpads and fill them with more stuffing to place the drivers further from the ear -- which is why we do the mod.

So based on your assessment above, a recable on the 2000 should make them virtually identical, correct?

Virtually, yes. Realistically, no. I have never heard a recabled D2000 so I can't comment on it's sound quality, and I don't know of too many people who have recabled a D2000 that have listened to a D5000. But why would you spend the money to recable a D2000? Why not just buy the D5000 in the first place which will end up costing about the same or less and have a higher resale value than the recabled D2000? What I can say is that the wood cups on the D5000 yield a much more "natural" tone than the D2000. The D2000 has a more "analytical" studio-type sound. So in that respect, I don't feel a recabled D2000 will end up sounding like a D5000, since you're still without the wood cups. The D5000 has an excellent cable on it. To me, the decision is a no brainer.

Wouldn't adding Dynamat Xtreme or any other damping material while doing the markl mod make the "natural" tone of the wood all but disappear, since the damping material's primary function is to deaden any vibrations, reverberations or tones coming off of whatever it's applied to?
