Morph, good writeup.

pfillion, don't be frightened when your recabled RS-1 sound brighter than the ALO 780's as they will calm down after 100-120 hours or so. Until then they can make the 780 sound a little dark if you listen to the RS-1 for a couple of hours and then switch after you acclimate

Thanks all! I hope it was coherent enough, considering it was extremely early for me when I typed it!

Default ALO780J

Right out of the box sounded very comanding PUNCHY through my Headroom Amp....Burning 49hrs now.... Just took them for another run and boy these have an opulance of there own spacious warm smooth highs punchy (when called upon ie Limelight Rush early drum line blew me away!!), near total bliss only drawback so far is the slight tightness of the cups around my head and the weighty jena cable, but overall very very pleased with the musicality that they are reproducing...Burining will continue and will try to update at 100mark intervals...

Yes; at the 200-plus point they've smoothed out considerably. Excess siblance gone.

i am considering these but im so lost

theres no way i can justify the best cabling option but the vampire cable is o the cards

im sort of getting a picture that they mite be suitable for me

i like a fast, detailed, sparking treble with impact bass, (not boomy and not too much)

i listen to a lot of metalesque music well see my sig

the question is
are they worth it rather than stock when using them with a pico?

Yes - the stock ones are a little bright, and with the Pico it might be an issue for you. The ALO modded 780 with vampire wire are, I feel, a different animal. The burn-in is shorter, and they don't have excess sibilance, but they are fast and controlled.

When I received the first ALO modded 780 for review, I had stock 780's to compare to, and if you search this thread and the other big HFI-780 thread for posts by me, you will find my reports on burn-in with stock and ALO modded 780's as they aged with use So what's the word on the new Ultrasone HFI-780???? - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio

In a nutshell the stock 780's with 255 hours were not as good as the ALO modded ones at only 48 hours, at which point I had ALO mod my stock ones. 2 weeks later also bought the review pair from Blutarsky.

I also had the stock and alo mod vampire cable to compare and alo mod was right from the start with no burn in smoother and less harsh and only got better with burn in.

for me the stock 780's were too bright and fatigued my ears but not the alo mod.

I just sent my stock version to get recabled with mogami cable and have the diodes taken out. I will compare that to my alo mod when I get it back soon.
