I would go for standard or smaller dock plug with the 3 wires coming out, into an enclosure of some kind just big enough to hold the caps, with a female 3.5mm plug in it. Maybe it could go between the imod and a portable amp?

Like this kind of thing maybe?

Lots of good ways to do it though.

howabout the el cheapo extraordinaire version: a dock connector glued to a cardboard box with caps inside the box.

but on a more serious note, I like stevenkelby's idea

But that would defeat the idea of being able to charge the Ipod and listen (or burn-in) at the same time, which is kinda how the whole dock idea came about in the first place.

There are a bunch of ways to do this and while I do not want to commit to anything I would ideally like to see the enclosure have the ability to charge, a on off switch, mini input and a mini out. To answer your question you would need a ipod connector to pull the signal from the iMod and send it to the device. Sonnically the best way to do this would be to have a soldered or hardwired cable coming off the box with the large caps that cab plug into the iMod. However this would pigeonhole you into having a set length. I would assume that one would want the most compact design however. Anyhow I will have some updates soon on this, please hold.

Ken, vibration could become an issue. The idea I sugested of using melted glue or similar to enclose the v-caps would also work nicely and it would be fairly inexpensive method of holding them in place. :veryevil:

Wow, this just keeps getting better and better. But boy am I glad I decided on the 4th gen iMod. Or I'd be killing myself with all the cable upgrades and the vDock. And believe me, I would GET the vDock!

Well yeah, the "box" I drew could have an on/off switch, 3.5mm in and out or just out and a cable with the dock on the end coming out, AC in etc.

If I made one I would just do it as cheap as possible though. Dock with nothing but L, R and G coming out for maybe 2 inches, then 2 v-caps in line on the L and R, covered in big heatshrink, and a male or more likely, female mini plug. All one piece, just like what I drew but with no box. To save money .

I like Ken's idea best, the dock with a fixed cable into a small box with all the features mentioned. The length of cable should be just enough so it can sit under the imod, as pictured.

Default Portable Vcap Dock

Gents,

I have a working prototype of the portable ALO Vcap Dock!

The enclosure is perfect and quite small. The Vcaps just barely fit in the box – a perfect fit I am having it CNC engraved as we speak and I will post photos very soon.

I have made a decision not to have the option for charging. Before anyone gets blue about this here are my reasons.

One - Charging is going to increase the over all dimensions of the enclosure and I wanted to give this the smallest foot print possible, Two – adding a charging circuit would add about $100 to the cost of the device because I would need to make a cable that connects to the iPod, and a bunch of wiring to the device with sockets and add a PS Three – I do not like the possibility to introduce line noise. In addition, Four (and most importantly) – I wanted this to be a portable device away from any wall sockets. If someone wants to charge while listening, he or she will have to look to the Wood Vcap dock for that ability.

Therefore, the configuration is simple; a Mini input on one side and a mini out AND RCA outs on the other side. I am going to make a deticated cable that will come included with the purchase to the device, however if you have a standard Ipod Dock cable that will also work. If you want to use it with your home AMP, just use some RCA cables.

The enclosure with the engraving looks KILLER! Sorry no price just yet but I am working on that also.

More on the way stay tuned.

Ken
