BRAVA chesebert for stepping up too the plate and speaking out what this dac sounds like.Even against the shark infested audio waters of non believers.
I have been preaching for so long now how good the older 1.2 sounded with many others backing me up.
It looks like things are just getting better and better.

... ugh, should I buy a distributor modded Zhaolu 2.x or concentrate on modding my superdac instead...

If you can mod your own stuff then by all means go that route. You can tweak it for your own ears.
Zhaolu D1.3 was always a little thin and bass shy for me.

My advice to you:
- Use your own ears as everybody's hearing and preferences are different.
- Try to audition as much equipment as possible to find your sound.
- Buy used to save money.

I have two stock DAC boards. The first I messed up It's nearly irrelevant to call them stock because they were different. Neither were blackgates. Blackgates don't mean much to me because IMO they don't have the bass I like either.

You mean how some of the components were different from one dac to another?

Well that's a headphone not a source. I'm not a fan of a lot of bass unless it's deep, detailed, and in control.

That is correct.

The "for audio" caps, Nichicon Muse, Elna Silmic, Sanyo Oscon and Blackgates ??? (what series of all were used I'm not sure) that have appeared on the D1.3 all have their sounds. They are all good but to my ears they sound different. *shrug* I wouldn't worry about it too much. I have a certain vision for the sound I think is good so mine is shaped a parcitular way. You can still mess with your sound with opamps. Just don't plug the opamps in the wrong way

Left to right:
Headphone input (analog inputs, to use headphone amp section only)
Headphone output (variable volume analog outputs, use as a preamp)
Analog outputs (DAC analog out)
Coaxial digital RCA input
Toslink optical input
Balanced outputs

I'm really looking forward to the discreet headamp coming out. I'm going to jump on it in an instant. It'll be interesting to see how different it sounds to my untrained ears switching from an unamped SB Live to this thing with the MS-1.
Yeah, the OP's test conditions werent exactly ideal, but there's a very good chance that this thing will be great.

According to the Zhaolu web site, the D2 measures 240mm (width), 300mm (depth) and 55mm (height).
