Beresford TC-7150 for the budget option. It's supposed to be able to keep up with the expensive DACs (up to ~1K) in testing (Benchmark DAC1, modded Zhaolu... one guy even said that it was almost as good as his Linn Ikemi) for only ~200USD.
What I really love is the multiple input and multiple outputs it has. 2 optical in, 2 coax in. 2 RCA out, with one being variable. I bet it'll work quite well for a switch.

Thank you, Mister Crash! I'll be looking into this lead as well! Gotta love head-fi!

I didn't spend any time doing critical listening for the differences between the two; I just took out the VDA-2 and plugged in the ECD-1. When I played the music, though, I wasn't blown away by any sonic differences.
Bear in mind that I was running both of them single-ended, as I don't have a balanced amplifier yet. I've heard that the ECD-1 benefits greatly from a balanced configuration, and I'm probably going to be upgrading to balanced in the next few months. The VDA-2 can also be adapted to a balanced output, and I have no idea how these two DACs would compare if they were both balanced.
The VDA-2 was a very large step up from the internal DAC I had been using before (inside the Denon AVR-2802 receiver). The ECD-1 felt more like a lateral move from the VDA-2.
could you link to the review where it keeps up with the Oritek Zhaolu?
whoa, calm down, d-cee - from my reading you're one of the most vocal supporters of the ori zhaolu! :P
i think roastpuff misunderstood (correct me if i'm wrong, roastpuff), but the statement i've come across is that its better than the modded zhaolu, not the ori modded, just the modded (by which i think the OP means upgraded board and bg caps)...

?? i just wanted to see which review he was referring to, as i must have missed that review but as it turns out it was just to a Zhaolu with caps/opamp mod (as now reflected in the editted post)
yes i love my OMZ but would like to read a review if it was claimed that a DAC in the beresford's price range bettered it.

unfortunately, a quick search in the FS section turned out zero result OMZ is fairly new, only has been available for a few months. I bet there will be one show up eventually.
