I think the benefits of balanced connections are longer runs because of better shielding or something like that.

I am wondering if it's possible to use the Apogee Duet with the Wadia. I know the Duet is only made for Mac.
Anyone knowledgeable on this? Thanks.

I think I'll stick to my Squeezebox since it's a decent transport in its own right, while being magnitudes more versatile in terms of user-interface and file-type compatibility.

This would only be accurate if the DAC is able to invert the digital signal...
From Wadia's Web site (white paper):
"TRUE BALANCED OUTPUTS
Fully-balanced circuit design -- with the inverted signal is produced in the digital domain, balanced DACs and analog out -- realizes the benefits of amplifiers with balanced outputs."
Don't think you could get this from DAC1 unless it has the same capability to invert the signal (balanced signals are inverted, also referred to as equal but opposite (like a mirror image of the signal).

Car Audio Stealth Solution
Greetings Digital Gurus!
Need your advice, please. As well as getting one for the home, I want to put one into a 600hp Cobra, which is currently being built.
The objective is to have no head unit, just an iPod. My thinking is to have a cradle on the dash board and a connection to the iTransport which I'd hide behind the dash. In the boot, a high-end Alpine amplifier (something like the PDX-4.150), and Alpine speakers.
BUT: what is the best DAC to put in between the iTransport and the amp which could run off a car battery and put up with that environment? Any advice would be very gratefully received.

iBasso D1 runs off 12v, and has optical and coax inputs, depending on what the Wadia has out. The 2006 HR Micro DAC is either 12v or 15v, I forget, and you might be able to make it work. The Apogee mini-dac also runs off 12v. The problem is the car is 12v when off and in the neighborhood of 14v when the engine is running.
So, I checked and my DAC from wai wai valve co. in China will run on 12-24v, and it is only $85-110 plus shipping, while using the same Cirrus Logic CS4398 as the HeadRoom and iBasso D1. Super Pro DAC707
This sounds pretty good, and I bought it to use with my Apple TV optical out into my Yamaha AVR in my bedroom.

correct, the analog output of the itransport is from the ipod. There is no DAC in this unit.

As far as I can tell there is no analog out from iTransport. It outputs bit perfect digital to be converted by your DAC of choice. Essentually your iPod is strictly a digital server.

Memory Player
So, I have recently been reading about this Memory Player that rereads the CD 200X to get a bit perfect copy onto the hard drive. This bit perfect copy is not interpolated with error correction guessed bits, but instead keeps reading the missing parts until it gets it right. Then it moves it to solid state memory and then outputs it. The reviews have been outstanding, but the price is around 17K including DAC.
My question is with the new Nano's/Iphone, feeding this Wadia, if we could get performance close to this memory player. I guess my real question is for the Mac is there a program like the one in the Memory player that would reread and reread the CD until it gets the data right. Once thats on a Nano, going through the Wadia into a good Dac, you should get unbelievable sound.
Any ideas on a program like that for importing CD's onto the Mac?

I read about that too. Interesting idea you have, I don't know if such a program for mac/pc exists or how accurate a program like EAC is but would love to know more.

EAC on a mac, have a read over here. It uses parallel desktop and run EAC on a virtual windows client. But i am wondering how much the EAC would differ from the iTunes rip.
I have a feeling that i can start all over again to import my CD's....
And then the question, to FLAC or not to FLAC, or would apple losless be good enough. On my old iTunes in the day's of iPod 3G, i could here a very small difference between WAV and Apple Losless; in music with a lot of amibiance reverb, with the Apple Losless format, you could here the dying of the reverb being cut off when it reached a very low level. (see mama, i told ya those IEM where good). Where as the WAV kept going, and going, and going and (please shoot that horrible duracell rabit.....)

After following this thread for months I just keep getting more confused as to whether I should get this product. I don't understand most of the technical jargon. I want to use my iPod as part of my home system. I don't want to use my Pico for this purpose. Should I be able to hook this up to my Rotel RSX-1058 or do I need to purchase a DAC unit to use it?
