I am surprised to see it has more refined and extended trebles suddenly. 3D imaging too improved now. I am very happy with this jewel and will not upgrade for some time.

Approximately how many hours of use/burn-in has it been?

1. 1212M has more 'details' in +4db mode, but this might be what some call 'harsh'; I was actually disappointed with this result (given the price). You may say it's not volume matched, but I wish I could easily make DA100 louder. With DA100 the vocal seems blended with the music
2. At -10db, DA100 shows more detail; bass from 1212M is a bit blurred by comparison
3. A problem that occurs occasionally but getting more frequent now is that I hear noticeable dropouts. At first I thought it's the source material, but it also happens when I use my scanner - now it happens even when the machine is idle. I might try USB later.
4. The unit is hot! There is also a big thud when I switch it off - is it supposed to be on all the time?
Appreciate it if somebody can help me with the SQ and the dropouts

1. If your ears are used to a brighter and harsher sound then maybe you have to "burn in" your ears for DA100. Listen to it some time and maybe you'll start to appreciate its sound. It's also possible that you simply like 1212M better.

Congratulations! Turn the volume on your amp all the way down before turning the DAC off, that's what I do.
No dropouts on mine, just the confounding hum issue. I'm going to exchange it (hopefully) next week, otherwise it'll be a refund and I'll get an Opera.
what is huming?if its your amp unplug everything and just leave your speakers hooked up.if its huming ists your amp.if no hum your amp is fine.do not unhook your ground.
next hook your dac to it with nothing hooked to any inputs.next start hooking one input at a time.if no hum then start to hook your preamp up to the outputs of dac one cable at a time and listen.
after that start to hook up other sources and you will find the cause of the hum.
but by no means disconnect the ground because if there is a problem with the grounding you could hurt yourself.
i have the full stello line and i could tell you that they are dead quite.
if you have your tv hook to it the cable or sat has its own ground and will make your system hum.
they make audio and video isolation as well a cable isolation.

What do you think about the bass performances of the two?
Almost 2 weeks and no DA100 to be found anywhere in sight Maybe I should look at other DACs (Purchasing a DA100 from April Music would be too expensive at nearly $800)?
