I have the CD5001 and it is a good CD player. I currently use it with an external DAC, but just going from the RCA line-out to a headphone amplifier was still pretty good when I had to run it that way for a while.
The built-in headphone amp with 1/4" jack is not bad, maybe slightly thin on the bass impact, but with headphones that have good bass it is not missing anything (Edition 9, HFI-780, D2000). The headphone amp is pretty detailed with nice soundstage.

That CD5001 is the best entry-level deal around. To get substantially better performance, one would have to spend a lot more.
I don't know where you live, sk007, but I would strongly dissuade anyone in the US from buying a new CEC player. The problem is that the NA distributor is in Canada and is very difficult when it comes to protecting territories of its amazingly few US dealers.
The CEC line had been handled in the US by Parasound some years ago, but dropped due to reliability and repair issues.
I also emailed Music Hall to find out the output impedance of the CD25, and Roy Hall himself replied that he had no idea what it was. That's just ridiculous!
How does the NAD C-542 compare to Marantz 5001 and the Rega Apollo? Thanks.
The only Q I can answer is I have read here that the NAD is a little warmer and more musical than the CD5001. However, I have no complaints about the CD5001 and haven't tried the NAD.

Not sure about the 5001. But IMHO the NAD C542 and Apollo are extremely close in sonic signature. But, the Apollo has slightly more detail and tighter bass. All that for $1195, compared to $499 for the NAD... (Don't let my wife see that, since I sold my father's day gift, NAD, in order to get an Apollo, only to discover the differences were subtle!!).. I had to move to a Saturn to REALLY notice a difference!!
