Question Read the Threads, but...Still Don't Know What DAC to buy!

Hi there!

Well, I've gotta get a DAC, because I've got nice phones and nice music - but bad source equipment.

I can't spend more than $500. Something about $300 would be best.

But I don't care about whether it can amp headphones - or amp anything. I'd really prefer a unit that was JUST a DAC. That's ALL I need, and I want %100 of the price to go towards that particular function.

Sound quality is the most important factor, but if it could also support 24bit 96khz streams, that would be brilliant, since I both produce and purchase audio in that format.

Since I will be using to review audio streams that I produce for reproduction on various systems, a neutral sonic character is also rather important.

I can't try anything before I buy it. There's nowhere near me that offers it.

Thank you for your help!!!

If using a laptop or a computer, I suggest the Emu 0404 USB. I love it to death.

I forgot to mention that - thanks for reminding me!

I am using a PC primarily, Win XP. Compatibility with my optical digital out CDP would be nice, but not essential.

I should add though that USB connectivity is not required, since my PC can already do 24-bit 192khz and has digital out.
