I used to have a 980H and I currenlty own a 983. I use the 983 as my main DVD player with my entertainment system. For my headphone setup, I use an NAD C542. Before I sold my 980, I a\bed it and the 983 with my Headroom Desktop and HD650's. I really did not hear any difference at all. Now, with the video, the 983 far surpasses the 980. For listening only, I'd save the bucks and stick with the 980.

From the earlier posts, I didn't see if anyone has received the 983H. Mine just came in today. It will be compared to the original Sony 7700 at 1/3rd the price. I am off tomorrow as well with the spouse at work so I get get everything connected without interuption.
So what's the story?

Do DVDs sound any better than with the 980? I have a 980 and while I'm happy with the sound(DVD) I still think my old Toshiba SD -1800 was more dynamic. For CDs, even when using an external DAC, I'm not that impressed and much prefer my SB3.

I think it sounds great in my system. I can't do a true comparison with the 980 as far as dvd sound, since when I moved I bought a completely new setup from the tv on down. As I stated in my last post, upconverting to 1080, the picture quality is insanely good.

I'm interested in upgrading my 980 to a 983 for my DVD system. Could you elaborate more how it 'far surpass' the 980? Read a comment that there will not be any noticible difference for anything =/< than 50inches. What TV are you using at the moment? Mine's a Panny TH-50PY700...
Hit that, hit buy, and get on the email notification list.
Just last week they put out a new batch, sent the emails out, and the people that got those emails swooped them all up. The email comes with a specific URL to make the purchase. If you want one and you see that you should not hesitate.
Oppo clearly has a runaway hit on their hands and can't keep up with the demand.
