While they're both linear trackers, the Mitsubishi is quite a bit more refined than the Technics IMO. I had one in the 80's and early 90's, and my system then was pretty good. I didn't get any noise transfer from the arm back then, but I'll keep my ear tuned. I'll be ready to test run the table soon, before doing any plinth work.

Well I just played the first record on the TT since buying it. After installing the new cartridge, dialing in all the settings on the table and hooking up the phono stage, I turned it on and hit play. The tonearm tracked over to the leading edge of the record, lowered itself down and played some lovely music.
Everything worked without a hitch, and no tonearm noise either, it moved as smooth as silk.
I'm excited as now I know it's time to move to the next step ... building the custom plinth. I've decided on East India Rosewood for the front and sides. There will be two 1/8" trim pieces that will wrap all the way around the plinth about 3/4" from the top and 3/4" from the bottom. They will be inlayed into the Rosewood, but will stand proud of the Rosewood by about 1/8". The trim pieces will be Quilted Maple and will coordinate with the Burled Maple top of the TT.
I hope the result will be worth your efforts. I am a little wary about the linear tracking arm... I have a Technics SLQ L1 which I have had since the 80s which is a linear tracker as well....
Putting the tonearm into the lid was ok on the earlier Technics compact Linear Trackers like the SL-10 because the they were very solidly made but when they started making them more lightweight like your SL-QL1 with more plastic parts the quality went downhill unfortunately. The same thing happened to the tangential tracking Beograms.
But the concept is alive and well with modern air-bearing arms like The Cartridge Man Conductor Air Bearing Tonearm which get around the mechanical issues of having the arm mounted on a mechanical sled.

Even with the aforementioned subsonic thump of the Technics table (mostly audible when using a sub), the advantages of a linear tracker are quite obvious with it. Perfect alignment every time, no tracing error, no anti-skate, no inner-groove distortions. I have been looking hard at the Cartridge Man Conductor and saw one on Audiogon last month. Finances are not quite there yet, however, but I've decided that is most likely the route I will go.

I agree. I have one of the Sony Biotracer linear trackers, a Beogram 6000 and also a 4000 which was the very first integrated turntable with a tonearm of this kind, although I think Marantz tried to make one in the '60s.

The Yamaha PX-3 and the Studer Revox B-795 look interesting to me as well.
The LT-30 seems to be tracking beautifully, and I can't believe how smooth everything is working. I should buy some belts while they're still available though.

Don't know how I missed this thread until now, but glad I found it. REALLY looking forward to your progress Steve, and will subscribe to enjoy the vicarious thrill of creation. It should be sweet when you are done. Good luck with next steps.
Alright, what about cartridge choices? I was reading some guys article and he said that low compliance is good with linear trackers... Naturally I was thinking denon 103... Any opinions?
