I see this thread being quite useful when I do my next upgrade. I'm sure I'll be picking the brains of the owners of certain turntables.

So the question is begging to be asked... are we going to have a thread for phono stages next?

It seems to me that the phono stage should be included in the vinyl-based analog source.

If you think about CDPs, or tape decks, or tuners, they are all black boxes that start with a music source, and end with line-out signals. Using this paradigm, then the phono stage falls within this black box, and a vinyl source would generally be something like:

Cartridge->Arm->Table->Phono Stage

You can't listen to vinyl with any of these four components missing from the chain. Now in some cases the phono stage is integrated into a pre-amp, so the line is a bit fuzzy, but in most high-end systems, it would tend to be a separate component.

Just a thought...

Phonostage is part of the vinyl setup.

Well you guys can list all your vinyl equipment in a post but I'm going to continue to list only actual source components, for the reason that the price of the other components is variable and that they can be "mixed & matched" so to speak (I know they're required for a full vinyl system, I have a subscription to Stereophile and read TAS & Tone Audio so I've been learning about this stuff). In the same way that external discrete DAC units and CDPs are one piece of the system, a turntable is also one piece of the system, right?

Technically yes, a table would be akin to a DAC or a cart closer to a DAC...wherein one can't do much without the other parts.

My whole system:

Michell Gyrodec modified, also includes the Orbe platter, motor and psu.
SME V arm
Grado Statement Statement cart
Hovland MG 2 phono cable (incoming)

If your going to do that then you might as well only list the cartridge. The true source of all vinyl playback.
