iPod dream...
I swear, I need shock therapy.
Last night I dreamed I bought a 80gb iPod that came in a clear case.
The wierdest thing, I don't have ANY desire for one! This is out of the blue completely, because I don't like MP3, and have all my music on CD anyway - it would be a nightmare to rip something before I plan to listen to it.
I just thought you folks on here would understand this.

funny that you posted this. i own the 30gb version, and i really like it. but i never really heard how good this thing sounds until i plugged my grado 325's into it. i normally only listen to it with it's own headphones when i run. and that sounds fine. i like the convenience of having 3500 songs in my pocket. the music on it is from my cd collection. im telling anyone that will listen, this thing sounds great with a great pair of cans plugged into it. and im not even using an amp!
so maybe you should listen to that dream and go try one out. but make sure to take your primary cans with you for the tryout.

Currently my 40 GB ipod is my only source. I use AIFF files and run it through my PPA/diamond buffer with hd650/zu and ER-4S headphones. I think it sounds great. I've only compared it to a modded 222 cdp and it was very close.
It holds about 850 songs with AIFF. I am also waiting on my Roku Soundbridge to give me full access to my 400 GB collection for when I'm home.

Wowzers...
but still, I can't bear the thought of putting my 600 CDs onto a computer... and then there's the 100 LPs... I've turned my back on the iPod unless there was a 5 minute way to easily put EVERYTHING on there.

The only good thing about using the AIFF files, is they rip quickly. A cd takes about 2-3 minutes and is essentially a perfect copy. The amount of space they take up is a pain but until the ipod starts using FLAC or AIFC files, that's the only choice for lossless files. WAV works too but takes up the same amount of space and doesn't use tagging like the AIFF files do.
I usually rip about 20 cds a day, sometimes more sometimes less. I've done about 400 so far and have about another 300 to go.
The Roku should be nice because it uses wireless networking, so I can move it around and use for the stereo and my headphones setup. I can even hook it up to the clock radio. I can even run it through a separate DAC if I really want to go highend audiophile.

you don't have to put 600 cd's on the computer, unless you feel like saving them on an alternate drive(in which case, invest in an alternate drive). i just rip what im going to put on the ipod(about a couple of minutes for a standard cd), then download to the ipod(about 45 seconds per cd), then i delete the cd off of the computer. simple.
i have about 3500 songs on there now.
