just want to make sure ppl understand PS1 sounds like POS without the expensive ancillary equipments and some very decent/clean power to back it up...so this is a YMMV!
MM does V! i find the ps1 just fine without any fancy doo-dah's hooked up to it, and it still outperforms anything else (digital) that i have owned. in my relatively low-mid fi system it does absolute wonders. makes me want to upgrade my speakers sooner than i can afford.
btw, i just bought a 'mint' condition scph 1002 on ebay, and it reads even cd-r's without any issues! compared to my previous one that would only read new cd's reliably. color me happy! best £15 ever!
I also use PS1 without any mods so far (I'll try later but have no money at the moment). It *by far* outperforms my mid-low-fi NAD player. I have NAD C340 amplifier and Paradigm Monitor 3 speakers. My SCPH-1001 also plays CD-Rs without a hitch, unlike the old NAD. Now I need to get Sennh HD-650 to be a little happier still:-).
hehe, you think it would be overkill to bypass the output stage with a pair of these?
going to do it i am afraid, along with some case options i am toying with...
ill report back in about 2 months when the project actually takes off (only drawing plans atm.)
Walnut veneered case anyone?

I think if you bi-pass the output stage you'll have nothing but a cheap 16-bit DAC. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

have you heard a version with a modified output? there are a few pairs of shoddy dc blocking caps right in front of the dac. i preferred this to stock.
i do want to try just replacing the crappy caps themselves at some point though.
I think there's something to what tfarney's saying. I tried output-modded PS1, and the unmodified version sounded much better to me. Theoretically, adding the Wima caps should have kicked up the performance, but it didn't really translate that way, weirdly enough. Those Auricaps are great, I'm sure, but I think in modding the output stage, you'd be messing with what makes PS1 so great in the first place. Some people do prefer the modded units, though, so you should try just for the sake of experimentation.

only one thing for it then, i shall have to get another ps1 to compare the two side by side, one stock, one with the output bypassed, and probably another one with just a few modifications.
