Does anybody know some good CDP with a built-in pre-amp? I know of the Mark Levinson / Wadia stuff but those exceed my funds Anything else to recommend?
Would you care to be a little more specific about funds available. At the moment we're looking at zero to BIG $.

Hi! Lets talk about appr. 2k then.....
Another option would be replacing my pre-amp with a passive one. Anyone experiences with that? It seems to me that this is a good option. One can get any CDP and has the pre-amp eliminated from the path.... Plus its less costly.

i've tried some cd players direct into my amp. i prefer having a good preamp in the chain.
have you thought about getting an integrated amp -- that would give you more flexibility with buying a cd player with the sound you like, as well as hooking up other components (a dvd player, tuner, etc.).

...nope, because I always thought that seperate pre/power amp set-ups are superior to integrated ones (in the same price range)...must I correct this opinion?

At 2k I'd suggest you go have a listen to the Opus21, which can be had s/h for that. Another option would be the Consonance Droplet. One of the versions has a built in volume control.
On the question of integrated vs pre-power. It's not as simple as one being better than the other. In theory the pre-power combo has the advantage (assuming money less of an objective). In practice, I've also heard good integrated and bad pre-powers. Worry less about the technology and more about what it sounds like.

i think you can wind up paying 2X for a lot of parts with two components instead of one. also, when you buy separates, you also have to buy a set of cables to connect them.
the biggest headache i had trying to use a source component with some variable output straight into an amp was that there are only so many cd players with that ... they don't necessarily have synergy with the amp you start wtih.

I think with amplifiers - there are good and less good ones , your point is absolutely valid. Listening is all that helps here.
Have you ever tried a passive pre-amp? Should be the cleanest way for a straight signal with a CDP of your choice + keeping some line-ins and remote controlled volume.
