Wow, you just don't get it do you?

Actors = $$$
Time = $$$
Video Production = $$$
Marketing = $$$
Creativity = $$$

Anyone involved in providing any of these services should be duly compensated for their time.

Sennheiser is a large multi-national company that has a huge marketing budget for just this sort of thing. But instead of giving you any of it, they want you to give them the goods for almost nothing. And hey, what's more credible to people looking to buy headphones than glowing 'independent' (ahem, solicited) reviews from actual users of their product? That, my dear man, holds the most value of all.

Personally, I have nothing against Sennheiser - I know some of their products are good; I actually own many of them. My issue is with the business ethics of this competition. Offering a $25 pair of headphones is not suitable compensation from such a business for what people are being asked to provide.

I get it entirely. However, a single YouTube review requires very little time and very little money. Many people make reviews for fun! These reviews are not intended to be of as much quality as a full advertisement; The contest is aimed at people such as me, to whom $25 headphones are worth a few minutes of time. The $25 used to motivate people to review their headphones will not do as much as $250, spent on an actor in a commercial spot, so why should Sennheiser be giving out anything of such value?

If I were a professional actor, marketer, video producer, etc., I would not bother doing this for the cheap headphones. However, I'm just a poor student, and the headphones are worth my time, meaning that I would be duly compensated!

nobody's forcing anyone to do anything

if they decide its worth their time, then they'll do it.

I realise no-one is being forced to do anything.

The problem is that there is a trend towards this sort of thing happening across the internet, and it undermines the value of the entire creative services industry. The problem is bigger than just this one thread, but if you don't educate people about it then they don't question it.

This is similar in theory to speculative work, more info on which can be found here: NO!SPEC

However, I assume that the issue is probably shipping costs. Again, we could probably work something out. I could pay the difference in shipping costs, for example.

With regard to the exploitation in this promotion, I don't think that it's exploitation. In the worst regard, Sennheiser is calling for actors in their commercials; In my regard, Sennheiser wants people to post short reviews on YouTube, because they know that the reviews will be appreciative ones. I'm a student, and an MX500 is worth the time that it would take for me to make this review. In fact, as I said before, I'd even throw in the shipping!
ahh what the hell-- Canada is fine

i look forward to your link!

as mentioned earlier, we're not looking to exploit. most youtube videos are done for free, driven by one's interests or passions for a hobby or lifestyle. $25 for 60 seconds indeed is pretty good. nobody at sennheiser asked anyone to make a $250-million-budget-summer-blockbuster-steven-spielberg picture! just tell us what you love about your sennheiser headphones, that's all!

the headphone enthusiast community is dwarfed by iPhone-this and funny-video-of-dog-biting-someone-in-the-crotch-that on youtube...if the videos get viewed by 8 or 8,000,000 people, i don't really care, as long as myself and some other head-fi'ers get to see them. again, its about the hobby, and its about music.

it would be much easier to give NOTHING away, wouldn't it?

...but we're not like that.

its all about the hobby

And as you read this i'm strapping on a pair of HD515 G4ME headphones, hooked up to my HeadRoom Micro Amp, listening to Stevie Wonder. I'm going to cruise the forums for about an hour and listen to whats going on in the community, because I'm always looking for a better way to enjoy my music, and HF is clearly the best way to figure out how, for free. I love my job and I love this community. Have a great day, everyone.

...allow me to play devil's advocate for just a moment. i sincerely appreciate your feedback.

head-fi is in fact, for the general community, a free service to those who use it. there are countless reviews of headphones here. does this then undermine the creative work of the writer's of Stereophile and Home Theater magazine, etc etc etc?

the internet has changed things, and we must embrace it rather than fight it. there's creativity in all of us, how we share it and are compensated is up to us.

Thinking about this "contest" has given me pause. It reminds me that I need to question all sorts of "reviews" I see around the Internet. Frank Zappa, espousing what he saw as the positive virtues of cynicism, once said in an interview that you should always ask yourself, "Is he getting paid to say that?" when evaluating somebody's claims. This contest is a good example of Mr. Zappa's point.

personally, im not huge on the senn' sound signature, i know many people love em' but its not for me.
(making a point that im not a loyal customer or fan, so im not saying this for those reasons):

that aside, be nice guys! hes offering free cans to loyal customers, and an opportunity to give back a little bit to the community - whether its going to help their PR or not, its more than a lot of companies would ever consider unless they were looking to make lots of cash on them.

as stated in a few other threads - i compete at a world level with yoyoing, ive been offered $130 yoyos for free given that i do a video review and show my support for the company. needless to say, i liked them already and had used a few of their products in competition - not a huge difference other than giving back to someone who supports the company already. not to mention - if you like senn's enough to buy some, and take advantage of this - why would you not want to help out a company you like?

And just for the record, sure, the true motivator behind me doing the review was getting a free set of headphones. However, there's nothing untruthful about what I said in my review. My experience with my Sennheiser 'phones has been nothing but positive and I'm happy to share that with the Internet community. If Sennheiser benefits, then that's great.

Here's my review! YouTube - Sennheiser MX 55 Review

My sentiments are the same as Phil; I would not have made that enthusiastic review had I not been offered this motivation, but I believe everything that I said to be true.

If you made it available to Australia, I'd be more then happy to post a review or two.

hehe: Aspire, you remind me of an old 60's news reporter. Where they put a new emphasis on every sentence as if it is the main point they are making.

heres my review. im no super expert or anything, i just gave my opinion on the headphones.

and btw, i was kind of mimicking the theme for a mymemory sennheiser video on youtube, so i owe the inspiration of the camera movement headphone thingamajigs to them.

YouTube - Sennheiser 595 Review

btw, how do we give you our info? do we pm you or something?

Yeah, I know, it's this weird thing that I do whenever I'm filming myself speaking into a camera. I don't know why, but I just can't not speak like that!

I guess it translates from how I speak normally. I like to speak quickly, and not use filler noises, so I just pause where I'd say 'um' or 'ehh.' It seems that when I'm being filmed, I move my head as well

One of my crazy quirks, I guess. (or I'm just crasy )

And not that it really matters, but I'm espire, not Aspire. Sort of a crazy combination of the verb aspire and the French word for hope 'espoir.'
