Default Using Metallized polypropylene caps vs. electrolytic caps

Is there an advantage using something like this:

Solen Electronique Inc.

compared to BlackGates or OSCONs?

Depends on application, but generally, yes.

I would say it depends on the application, cost, and SQ. Most will say any film capacitors (Polyester, Polypropylene, Paper In Oil, etc...) will "sound" better than electrolytic capacitors. However when you need a 1000uF cap in your PS, then film caps are really unpractical and whether they are any better is of much debate.

In the signal or audio path of a circuit, sure try and use film caps whenever possible. Outside of that, using quality electrolytics is good. Like in a PS section, try to use caps with low ESR and high ripple current (Nichicon UHE, UFW, Panasonic FM, etc...).

Blackgates are supposedly one of the best sounding electrolytics caps comparable to film caps. However I've heard many times, that almost any quality film cap will beat out a BG.

Depends very much on the application...
You can basically use Os-Con only as cathode bypass caps (low voltage rating)... here they sound very good (tried that in my C3G headphone amp).
Using film caps like the Solen's as cathode bypass caps is highly impractible...

On the other hand you can build an all-MKP psu with a few chokes in between (also did that in my C3G headphone amp )...

In the end it is up to you to decide what sounds best for you since sonics of capacitors is a very subjective matter...
