powering a mini-itx pc with a battery
I've done several hours of googling, and I do have some leads, but the ones I'm sure will work are more expensive than I'd expected. I thought I'd see if the resident experts here might be able to point me in the right (cheap and simple) direction.
In case you're wondering why I'd want to do this... I havent been able to find a linux compatible usb sound card with a bit-perfect coaxial out; now I'm thinking PCI and a notebook is out. The plan is to build a bag/frame to house a computer, a dAck, amp, batteries, chargers, etc. I want to be able to listen at home, on the bus and at work and control the playback software with my ipaq over bluetooth.

Why do you want to lug around all of that stuff?? It seems incredibly inconvenient.
I think it would be complicated to provide all the right voltages for the motherboard/components. Also, interfacing with the computer using only the ipaq would be troubling I think. Why not just get a PCDP

there are mini itx specific DC powersupplies that run off +12vdc, they are usually less than $50 and they are bascially just a pc board that snaps onto the ATX connector...
you would need to lug around a lead-acid battery at least if you want some decent runtime

I have indirect reports that the M-Audio transit can work on linux, but i can't confirm this.

This is true. Lead acid batteries are heavy.
