Lowering the noise floor of a Melos?

I've noticed that my Melos has a higher noise floor than the EAR HP4 (which is pretty well dead silent, as good as any solid stage amp I've heard) and I want to figure out a means of lowering it.

Roger Hebert of Wyetech Labs had installed a switch which grounds the unit or adds a 50 ohm resistor to help lower the noise floor.

Has anyone any experience tinkering with their units to make it even quieter? Mine is unique...12AU7-based and no pre section, but it should be pretty similar to other Melos amps out there in overall circuit design.
