Floppy drive power supply used with Xfi Elite Pro
I need a floppy power connection for an external device.
Normally the floppy drive is connected to the 4 pin floppy drive connection off the computer's power supply. I need something with the same connector that is not associated with a computer.
Basically I have an Xfi Elite Pro that I want to used in a Dell D/Dock. It has power via PCI connection, but does not have an additional floppy power connection for the external box.
How would I go about making one or getting one? I can not hook it up to a full blown computer power supply, because there will not be one.
I know that the floppy power is +5v/gnd/gnd/+12v.
I believe I can buy an off the shelf transformer (wall wart variety) and solder the correct connector to it (which is no problem). My knowledge of electronics is limited so I do not know what to look buy or look for. Am I looking for a 5v supply or a 12v supply?
I also looked over the X-fi details and could not find the power requirements of the connector. I am certain it is the floppy adapter.
Suggestions?

eh?
The breakout box is powered solely by the connector from the pci card... I'm really not sure about this "floppy connector" that you are talking about...

you misunderstand.
the breakout box receives all power and signal from the "vga" look alike cable (the AD_link cable).
the power that flows from the PCI card via the AD_link cable to the breakout box comes from a floppy style power connector located on the PCI card. I have unplugged the connector and verified the breakout box goes dead.
it is that power connector that I am trying to duplicate.
I also need to know what voltage the card needs, I am going to assume 12v, but would like more than just my hunch.

I could not find the information on the web or from Creative (I asked).
So I decided to experiment and cut some wires. Here are my results. The only thing hooked up from the wire coming off the power supply was the X-Fi Elite Pro. Of course the computer was powered by the remaining wires. The power supply is an Antec Phantom 500w.
Multimeter is a approximately $25-$30 radio shack variety
With the 5V rail cut and 12V rail intact
1. normal operation of external i/o box
2. multimeter in line 5V rail reveals no current flow
With 12V rail cut and 5V rail intact
1. external i/o box does not power up
2. still no current via 5V rail
3. dead in water
With 5V rail cut and multimeter in line with 12V rail
1. normal operation
2. starting current of 270mA
3. peaks at 386-389mA (max volume really had nothing very little to do with it - hence the difference of 3mA).
I checked the voltage on the 12V rail and was quite surprised. It never changed from 12.00V, not even to 11.99 or 12.01V. I realize there are the limitations to my multimeter, but none the less I am impressed.
Next step, I need to find a power supply that outputs exactly 12V at around 1amp. Any suggestions on a quality one? I am thinking of a linear regulated one? Suggestions?

It definitely sounds like you need a well-regulated supply. These are pretty expensive off-the-shelf as far as I can tell. Your cheapest bet is probably to buy something like 418-TR1515E from Mouser and put some regulation after it. An LM317A with some capacitance on both sides is probably enough, or you could go with something like the TREAD if you don't want to build the reg from scratch.

OH ok... sorry bout that... I did misunderstand
I second error401's suggestion. Grab a tread and mess with the resistance values to get it down to 12v(remember that the stock value puts out from 20ish to 30ish volt wise)... you want to be really careful with the xfi... or you may end up with a fried soundcard...and that would be sad
If you really wanted to be careful i suggest getting an elpac--->tread...should give you really clean power...I have one of those cheap $10 walwarts from mouser... claims to output 24V... i tested it and it outputs 32V- i wouldn't trust em.

I can't decide between the tread and the steps power supply.
The easier way would be to go with the treads, but I think the educational part of the steps might be worth it.
I was also thinking about getting this http://www.batterygeek.net/Portable_...atterygeek.htm
But that would be way overkill, but it would have multiple uses.
