While there's nothing wrong with being extra-cautious, a savvy consumer can get great NOS tubes on eBay at better-than-dealer prices. Yes, some tubes may be fakes, but with a bit of research, one can learn enough about the physical characteristics of certain brands to know what's real and what's not (e.g. a rebadged Sovtek 6922 looks very different from a real Amperex 6DJ8 if one knows what to look for)..
