The RKV most certainly does have tubes, but it's the opamp on the input side that controls the SQ and sound signature. Without the OPA627 upgrade the amp can sound thin, noisy and irritating by comparison.
I still have not been able to get worked up about any Gilmore amps I've heard (a fair number). I do, however, really like Justin's (Headamp's) new AE-2 very much.
I didn't mean to say that the OPA627-RKV sounds like the Portaphile — just that I love what it does for the K701 and I can listen to it for hours.
