Newbie Technical question - Head-Fi: Covering Headphones, Earphones and Portable Audio

Hey all. I'm new to the headphone scene and I'm trying to learn all I can. I've looked for the answer to this but can't quite find it. What do buffers do in amps? What does it mean to stack buffers? Thanks
