I am looking for a way to listen to my vinyl on my cans, and I am a bit new to the world of vinyl. I currently have a pair of AKG K240's and I've been very happy with them, yes they do have some drawbacks; but for the money they do everything I need them to. I also have a technics sl-6 record player which I have been very happy with the sound of. I have heard a couple tube amp setups, can't remember the branding, but I like the warm sound of tubes. My requirements are tubes, not too expensive (<700$), and I would like for the amp to play nice with my current equipment. I am very handy with a soldering iron, and have no problems with a kit, but am not enough in the know to look at a circuit diagram and know what parts to buy from there. I wouldn't mind a finished product either. Any ideas?
These two kits are purely tube-based phono preamps so to drive headphones you would need an amp also. Do you currently have a phono-pre and are just looking for a headphone amp to build or instead are you looking for an phono-pre and headphone amp combo to build?
Hagerman Technology LLC offers a tube kit called the cornet2 and a headphone amp called the castanet. The kits are fairly inexpensive ($150 each) but im sure the parts are expensive
I'll second all the advice given so far - good stuff!
You might also want to look around Audiogon for a used Conrad-Johnson preamp. I bought a PV-2 for $300 awhile back that has a phono stage, is all tube, and sounds good. It has tape loop outputs, as well, which is super handy for headphone amps. You'll be able to switch sources and eventually hook up a power amp for speakers, if you like.
Take a look at the older CJ preamps - you'll find a bunch of them in your price range and most have a phono stage. They have nice build quality, all tubes are available (and reasonable), and the factory still services anything they've ever made.

what do you guys think to the rogue metis tube preamp? This seems to be a combo of what I'm looking for, although would it be better to have discrete components?
