Amp help for upcoming DT 880
Hey there guys,
I am just about to Purchase the Beyr DT 880 from Meir Audio, they have them for a very good price. 210$ including International shipping.
Anyway, I also want to attach them with a nice Amp, but the choices are pretty narrow.
I corrently have the HF-1 (#51 ) which I like very much.
The cause for the low number of amps is because I live in Israel and not a lot of stuff get here.
The Options are as follows:
- Aqua Headphone Amp, and Israeli made Headphone amp
- Vincent KHV-111 Hybrid Headphone amp
- Creek OBH 21 Headphone amp
- Musical Fidelity X-can v3 Tube headphone amp
I can also order amps form Meir audio and Headroom, but i really dont know cuse i wont have the ability to listen to them before buying, I guess I will do so only if will be convinced that they will outperform any of the above amps i mentioned, if you compare them at the same level of price of course.
I listen mostly to Metal and Rock music, which mostly requires different abilities then usual stuff. IMO off course.
My Equipment is listed below in my Sig, for your concern.
What do you think will be better in case of performance and what are the charisteristics of the above Amps. I hope i will have the opertunity to listen to them all.
Btw, is there any room for comparison Between Beyr (DT 880 in this case) and a Grado (HF-1 in this case) headpones in matters of performance, sound signature and stuff like this ?
Thank you very much for those who will help

I always thought the general concensus was that the dt880s werent really rock cans? Especially when compared to some Grados.

I'll parot the comment about 880's not really being rock cans. (HF-1 would be much better for rock) but they do it well, just not as good as others. With 880's your probably best witht he X-Can tube amp. 880's like tubes You couldent go wrong with a Headroom Micro /w DM either. It's a warm sounding solid state amp with great features and value for money.

There has been a lot of positive talk here about the Meier Corda Aria, you should do a search and read through. If you were to order that Meier would knock a further $30 off the DT-880s I think.

That's right. An extra $30 saving. I ordered the Aria and DT880 combo. They will hopefully be shipped this week.

I'm pretty sure you'll like the DT880. Simply it should compliment HF1 very well. I used to have SR225/K501 tag team which I loved because they really compensate for each others strength and weakness. Only reason for me to part with grado was their comfort issue.
Anyway, the DT880 are very sweet sounding as they're very well balanced. Not too much bass, treble, midrange. Just right amount of each without intereference of one creeping in. I'm actually shocked how well the DT880 are handling some 50 Cent, Lauren Hill, Jay Z...Total surprise to me!!!

Grados are not necessarily better for rock.. I greatly prefer my DT880 for rock. It comes down to your ears.

The main reason for me buying this headphones is because I really try something different then the grado, not that i dont like the grados, I just sometimes find it a bit dry and with a thin sound, which in some recordings, music style (other than Rock/metal) I find it lacking.
furthermore I have read very good things about htis headphone so I am very shure I will like it.
The main thing that botters me right now is the AMP, from what I read here people say that the DT 880 is a power hungry headphone, and that it likes Tubes very much, adding this the Corda Aria and I am totaly confused about what to choose.
And this is where you guys fits into the picture :-) so dont be shy
BTW my DT 880 is shipping today from Meier Audio :-)

Grado's sound awsome on tubes as well. I'd also tell you to look into a used Millet hybrid but you'd have to buy it from USA and have it shipped international. The Aria is solid state, but it also comes with a dac which is a nice plus if your current source is lacking.

THe thing is, I did not have the opertunity to listen to any Tubes equipment, especially when it comes to Headphones, So I really dont know if its my "Cup of tea" if you know what I mean. I guess I will have to listen and find out, it will come to the Vincent Hybrid Vs. the Musical Fidelity X-Can v3 and the Aqua (Israeli made Hedphone AMP) Vs. OBH- 21SE.
If i could just listen to the Corda Aria first

If I were you, I'd try the AQUA amp first. I have heard very good things about AQUA products. If you really hate it you can still try other options. But maybe you'll love it! And that would be the easiest solution of them all.

1. DT880s are great rock headphones (unless you prefer Grado coloration and lack of comfort).
2. You should immediately consider cardas cable upgrade for DT880s; really makes them sing.
3. While any of Dr. Meier's amps would (IMHO) compliment and sound good with the DT880s, I am driving mine with and AudioValve RKV Mk II; there's a reason Marshall still makes tube amps.

Well by this argument we can say that there is also a reason while the whole world is now using solid state, and chips, instead of tubes, in amplification, and there is no way we will believe that the whole world is wrong, and this includes companies thate pioneered the tube amps production in the past....
Sorry I couldn't resist....
