Default X-Fi Elite Pro Console problem

Any of you with the X-Fi Elite Pro experiencing problems with the analog inputs in the back of the console? I've plugged in different components such as turntable, CD player, cassette deck. The problem is that I can't hear the sound that's coming in although it's registering in the Creative Player recording view. If I record, I get the recorded music fine. It's just that I can't monitor/hear the input. I get sound every once in a while, but it's intermittent. I've checked all the obvious Creative and Windows XP software switches. I'm thinking that it might be a codec problem, but I'd hate to mess with that. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
