Default soundcard required with external DAC?

hi, i have DFI-NF4 motherboard which has SPDIF out, and i also have Chaintech AV-710 soundcard. now i am thinking about buying an external DAC and im wondering if i can connect the DAC directly to the motherboard and remove the soundcard? i am only interested in 2ch audio for this setup.

if so do i need drivers to allow Foobar and Winamp to send bitperfect out of the motherboard and into the DAC? thanks for any info

Try Googling this string:

Realtek ALC850 "bit perfect"

There are a number of threads on Head-Fi and other audio forums that have gone back and forth on this one. It appears that you need the correct drivers for the Realtek codec along with the proper plug-ins for the player apps and some work to get it bit-perfect.

Sure, coax has some advantages over TOSLINK, but it might not be worth the effort to get it right.

Yes, the flame:sane response ratio in that hydrgenaudio thread was rather discouraging, wasn't it?
