E-MU just released new drivers, so who knows, there might not be any bugs, and I was using XP32--Vista 64-bit may not have the same problems at all. I noticed an occasional sound drop-out in F.E.A.R. last year, but I think it was solved. The 1212M's control panel "PatchMix" will probably seem overcomplicated compared to other drivers, but once it's set up, you should be good to go.
The X-Fi Prelude is designed for gaming and includes all of the latest gaming-related features, including analog surround outputs. Gotta weigh the pros and cons as with any decision.
Great, I'll have to pick one up next week. Love the exapandability on this not to mention price (never use analog out other then headphones from time to time so no biggy on no analog surround) My xplosion control panel seemed very under featured so it would be nice to have something overkill that i can tweak my brains out with. Is there any downside with the card not having DDL/DTS and watching movies on it? Or would my receiver be better at that conversion regardless? Oh forgot to note that reciever has a 5.1 setup currently (don't plan on 7.1 anytime soon either) Thanks for all the help.
Yep, your surround receiver is designed to handle all of the DTS decoding and surround mixing. Consider the 1212M to be your best two-channel analog source and a great digital transport for surround content.
I am very happy with my Echo Mia. Good sound quality and problemfree.

hey infinite, so i did a little more digging and i came across a couple posts that mention that the HT claro+ is comparable the the auzen meridian (discontinued), but they're also comparable only if they're used for the digital outputs, not the analogue. so i'm kind of confused here in terms of how the claro would stack up to the meridian.
It'll mainly be for music and movies.
so it's down to either the HT claro+ or the auzen prelude.
edit: these are going to be paired with analogue 5.1 speakers.
...they're also comparable only if they're used for the digital outputs, not the analogue...these are going to be paired with analogue 5.1 speakers.
That should answer your question... You want the card for the quality of its internal D/A, not its digital output.
I'm not familiar with HT Omega, but the Claro Plus+ seems like it should be comparable to the Prelude. It uses the same DAC chip with a different audio processor (C-Media versus X-Fi) and different op-amps. All of these cards in the $200 range should be similarly good.
Even if you had a Blu-Ray drive, there are currently no software options that allow playback at the original lossless high-res sampling rate. Additionally, you will not be able to send HD content through the digital outputs of a sound card. So, for HD movies, no current sound card will solve that problem.
