prelude with opa627 opamp
I was listening to my friends pc rig the other day and couldn't believe what I was hearing. He has the auzentech x-fi prelude with modded burr- brown opa627 opamp. Simply put, his setup rivals my uncle's Wadia 581 cd player. I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience?

Well the Prelude are top quality cards. They can rival other gear. The 627 opamps are nice but very pricey about $15 per single channel. So $15 X 2 for stereo then a brown dog or other adapter-well you get the picture...quite pricey. Very nice sounding though.

I am hearing marvelous comments on this sound card. I think will be in my next purchase. This sound card dethroned a friend's DAC /AMP setup, that I wont mention here, for some ethical reasons.

Prelude + OPA627 sets , but in bit perfect mode? so you're basically using the card as transport only? what's the point changing the opamps?

I don't have the prelude but I have a card built off the same Oxygen hd CMI8788 of the Prelude, the Razer Barracuda AC-1. Basically it's lacking EAX, gold everything, and easy swapping of opamps.
Very impressive soundcard compared to the 0404 pci and x-fi platinum I've owned. I was wondering the other day if the Prelude would be an actual worthwhile upgrade for me or maybe even the x-fi elite, it's too bad the Barracuda has gotten such a bad rep for being a Razer branded product ~ I think the resell value has tanked for this particular card.
Then again I just want a kickass DAC!

yes - like a dac - not with x-fi procesor "resampling" - and the op-amp in analog out - make a big difference .
op-amp is a analog component - and ak4596 is the dac .

I'm loving my prelude, just got it. I need to find some way to get rid of the high pitched squeel I get when listening through headphones though. really ruins the experience and swapping pci slots hasn't done anything.
really great card though, hope to solve this problem soon.

The Prelude doesn't use a 8788 Chipest. It uses a 20KX series (X-fi) processor. The X-Meridian from Auzen used the Oxygen chipset. Which is also a very nice sounding card. Those (8788) chipsets power some very decent cards. I know a few guys that dumped Razors for Prelude and they were very happy with the new Preludes. I am thinking of ordering some new high end amps for this card such as the OPA627's or 637's should kick the sound up a notch..

the op-amp lm4562 is very good .
the 627 is not worth the money for prelude .

I don't understand.
Since you're using Bit-perfect through Digital output (optical/coax), your prelude just transformed into transport to other external DAC, what's the point changing opamps (eg. change to OPA627), since the DAC chip inside Prelude it self isn't used when prelude in transport mode? How this opamps affect the transport output quality?

no - no - not a "transport" - the bitrate of surce - is not upsampled - or resampled to ex: 48khz is left like it is
the dac is use in both case
dac = digital to analog converter - is a device for converting a digital code to an analog signal .
this is valid just in analog output
in digital output - is no difference - in case of prelude .

I think we totally misunderstood each other,
however, I'm about to emphasize your statement.
