I would look at the Firestone Fubar 3. It seems to have just the features you are looking for (DAC, pre-amp, headphone amp), and it has the quality to do good equipment justice. Spending more the source than the speakers/cans doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

That's my setup. iMac to Fubar III via USB to a tube amp. However one weird thing about the fubar is that the line out does NOT bypass the volume control. So you'll end up with two volume control in the analog path.
P.K.

One of the features is a Pre-amp so it's not weird at all. Though I suppose it would be nice to have the abality to bypass it for those going to integrated amp.
tinseljim, how about without the mod ? how does it sound ?
vjack, oh yeah.. twice the price, half the function .
It sounds good without the 'mod' but very good/great with just one opamp swap. I hardly call this a mod as it's just a case of taking off the cover (6 small screws) and taking out one socketed opamp and replacing it with the OPA627AU. Very easy even for a non-diyer like me
The new units can be purchased with this upgrade already installed (extra $25 I believe). If you want more info and a review have a look at the Zero Dac Preamp thread (it's getting long! but the first page/review gives a good idea).
Can be purchased from Lawrence and is a great person to deal with feel free to PM if you want his email (best way to contact him, but believe you can do it through ebay as well). Oh and I'm not affiliated etc...
