i have an sb live! 24-bit toslinked to an emu0404 usb. i use my mic regularly now that i started playing games again, but it really sucks that i have to switch off digital out just to be able to use it.
is there a way to get them both working at the same time, maybe with a different card? or am i out of luck?
any help would be appreciated!

you could go out into the wilderness and hear it forreals for less than that
i suppose switching to a different card might help. sb live! is a junk anyways.(no offence, i even thought my audigy 2 was junk) right now im just using the motherboard onboard audio with my mic and it works fine while toslinked to my beresford tc-7510 DAC.
question: is your mic pluged into the emu0404usb or is it plugged into to the soundcard? mine is plugged directly to the soundcard.
unfortunately, the sb live is my onboard audio. i guess getting a new card is the solution. my mic is plugged directly in to the soundcard.
do you know if the chaintech av-710 can do mic in while providing digital out?

No.. I had the same problem with my setup. AV710 > toslink > Zhaolu. I had to mess with the Ventrilo settings (is this what you're using?). If you are using vent, here is what I did.
Go into setup and on the right side of the screen is the hardware input mixer (optional) stuff. Change the line to Mic and that fixed it for me Hope that helps.
its not vent i'm using. i'm using steam's built in voice chat with team fortress 2. thanks for your help though, at least one of us has gotten it to work.
the mic doesnt even work in windows sound recorder when i have it configured for digital out. seems like its more of a windows or hardware problem rather by application. :\
