He didn't wanna use USB because the macbook has only 2 USB ports.
I think the MicroDAC sounds wonderfull with a macbook. Besides the MicroDAC has USB, optical and coaxial inputs and it's portable ...

The MicroDac costs more than I wanted to spend, but it may be the best choice I have - portable, DAC only, no amp section, and, as epaludo noted, it has USB, optical and coax inputs. Maybe I'll luck out and find one in the For Sale forum!
