I have been using Amarok for quite a while, and I hadn't seen anything that looked competitive. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to work out all of the wrinkles from my install of Amarok (and I've given it a big effort). It still clips off the last few seconds of the final song in my playlist. Additionally, my latest install (I try out different distributions pretty regularly) is not behaving well with my music collection. Because of this, I decided to give quod libet a whirl.
If you haven't tried this player/library manager, I highly recommend it. My install was painless, and it pulled in my library very quickly. There's a plug-in for fetching album art, but I already had this in place from when I switched my collection from Windows. Anyway, I think I prefer the layout to Amarok's (you can see the album art in your collection, which I like). Furthermore, I've had no issues whatsoever (fyi, I'm using a Mepis distro at the moment with KDE). I was a little reluctant to bring in a bunch of gnome libraries, but the install was suprisingly short. So far it's very snappy on my middle of the road system.
If you need a new player, give this one a shot. Heck, if you don't need a new player, give it a shot--you may be pleasantly surprised.
Quod Libet is my player of choice for Linux (Ubuntu/Gnome). Amarok was fine, but kind of clunky and seemed very slow. The only problem with Quod Libet, as far as I'm concerned, is the lack of gapless output, but hopefully this is something that will be implemented in future releases (of either quod libet or gstreamer).
I've been using aqualung(http://aqualung.sf.net) for quite some time now, it was built to be gapless (for formats that are gapless). A lot of work was done on the mp3 decoder a while back and supposedly lame mp3 is now gapless too, i don't use it, so i don't know. It has a lot of neat features, like ladspa support(commonly used dsp plugins) and decent jack (sound server) support. It doesn't have eye candy (no visualisation) or anything like that. Give it a whirl, beta7 was released recently, the svn versions are almost always useable (i use those).

Thanks for the suggestion - I'll try it when I get back home.
