Default linux: need help redirecting sound to DAC

Hey all,

I am using an emu10k1 card in linux with ALSA, where everything pretty much works and I'm trying to get all sound redirected to my Alien DAC also. I have an .asoundrc which duplicates some of the audio from two of my speakers to my rear speakers to get more of a surround sound feel which i like:
Code:
pcm.emu10k1 {
	type hw
	card 0
}

ctl.emu10k1 {
	type hw
	card 0
}

pcm.duplicate {
	type plug
	slave.pcm "surround51"
	slave.channels 6
	route_policy duplicate
}

pcm.ch51dup {
    type route
    slave.pcm "surround51"
    slave.channels 6
    ttable.0.0 1
    ttable.1.1 1
    ttable.0.2 1
    ttable.1.3 1
    ttable.0.4 0.5
    ttable.1.4 0.5
    ttable.0.5 0.5
    ttable.1.5 0.5
}
So, in XMMS I would use the hardware device 'duplicate' ... and if I want to use my DAC I have to change it to use my USB... i can't have it use both at the same time which is what I want. Also, I'd simply like to redirect all sound to my DAC so other application sounds go through it too.

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks!
George

Unfortunately I'm not too good on all the ALSA configuration options, I've only read as much as was necessary to send signal out via spdif out on my card, but you should be able to get some ideas on how to proceed by reading the alsa wiki. Another good resource that I always find useful is gentoo wiki, their alsa howto is here. Are you sure that alien dac can accept multichannel input, by the way? Isn't it just stereo?

Sorry, this is probably not what you're looking for, but maybe someone else can give you more detailed info. I would also suggest asking this question on a forum for whatever Linux distro you are using.

Good luck.

this is a good start, thank you!

you're correct, i'm not trying to give it multichannel input... just trying to not lose my multichannel output to my speakers in the process

i'm poking around the alsa wiki now
