"Too often we measure everything and understand nothing." jack welch
This doesn't make me happy. I was thinking of getting a Mac. My library is on a USB drive. I was hoping I could just connect the drive to the Mac and open the library in iTunes. I have almost 40,000 tracks. It'll take a long time to import that.
You only have to do the import once to create the library, then you'll be fine. You can use your gear exactly as you have described.
I suggest you turn on "Share my library on my local network" on your Mac iTunes, and "Look for Shared Libraries" in the MS Windows iTunes. Then the Library will update dynamically.
Or am I missing out on something?
Wow... it worked!
I tried this a while ago (maybe 8 months or a year ago) and couldn't get it happening - googled around and discovered it was limited at the time to machines on the same OS.
Just tried it again, and have my Mac seeing the shared library from my PC. There are limitations... but in terms of general use - it's great.

I keep one copy of my library at work and one copy at home. I've done the import of the whole library at once and it's the pits. I've had one or another of the music hard drives fail twice. It's great to make an exact copy of my library disk, take it to another computer and just open the library. If I can't do that between a Mac and PC, it might influence my decision on what OS to get. It's not an immediate concern though.

I've shared from PC to PC. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, you can share your whole library or a single playlist. If you share your library, what the other PC sees is the same as you see when you select Music, in other words, every track in your library.
Nothing in terms of audio quality, more functional restrictions. The main one for my is no coverflow view of your music. I love to browse albums and find the visual representation very helpful. I also use signal ATM (though that's likely to change now that the 'official' Apple remote software for the Touch is out) to control my library. Because of the way it uses playlists with iTunes I'm pretty sure it won't work with library shares. I also noticed a bit of lag between songs (very occasionally) but more often albums. This isn't because of my network, but rather due to the method of streaming employed to share libraries as I understand it.
