when I rip to apple lossless with itunes error correction, the rip speed never goes above 4x and is usually around 2.6-3.4 . Without error correction I got x6.......but I remember getting x12 just awhile back. any reason for this? I'm ripping onto an extra internal harddrive so that might be slowing me down. i've heard that the processor might be the problem but my processor isn't that bad, its like 2.8 ghz.
It sometimes depends on the CDs themselves. With some on my Macbook Pro I can get 18x or more. With others I can only get what you're getting. From my experience (and I've been using iTunes since version 1) it simply will vary for you from disc to disc.
