Default Ipod as a source....Am I killing my music?

I'm just about to get my first amp and decent pair of earphones (probably hd650s) and planned on using my ipod as a source. Unfortunately when I finished putting most of my music into my ipod (back when i was using my apple earbuds) i thought my cds had become obsolete, and i took less then good care of them. Now that i am getting into the head-fi culture, i know the my non-lossless music is going to sound like rubbish on my ipod. Short of reinvesting in many cds, is there anything i can do? Should i be using something different then an ipod with lossless files. I'm leaving for college next year and have limited cash, so i cant do an expensive or non-portable(ish) setup. Anybody have any advice?

If you install the Rockbox firmware on your iPod, you can play almost any file format on it, including the most popular choice for lossless, FLAC.

You might try Roadkil's Unstoppable Copier on your CD's before you give up..

http://www.roadkil.net/unstopcp.html

A good coat of auto paste wax on the bottom of the CD can help too.. Do it just like you were waxing a car.

I haven't tried it but I suspect that liquid polymer they sell to repair scratched plastic eyeglass lenses might work even better than wax.

The only thing that really kills a CD is scratches on the *top* side. As long as you can't see obvious holes in the metal layer when you hold the CD up to the light, generally the data can be gotten back out.

I have the equipment to polish out all but the very worst scratches on the bottom of a CD.

PM me if my suggestions don't work and we can discuss things.

the cds that i have are fine, but ive been dealing mostly in itunes for the past few years, the only 2 cds ive bought in the last 2 years are Sufjan Stevens, come on feel the illionois and Tom Waits, Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards, but just because i was away from a computer when they came out. Any way to repair the files?

I'm not sure what you mean by "repair" but once an mp3 is encoded there really isn't much that you can do to make it sound better.

Mp3's are "lossy" files, that means audio quality is lost in the encoding process and can never be recovered.

What bitrate are your mp3's encoded at?
