I'm just about to get my first amp and decent pair of earphones (probably hd650s) and planned on using my ipod as a source. Unfortunately when I finished putting most of my music into my ipod (back when i was using my apple earbuds) i thought my cds had become obsolete, and i took less then good care of them. Now that i am getting into the head-fi culture, i know the my non-lossless music is going to sound like rubbish on my ipod. Short of reinvesting in many cds, is there anything i can do? Should i be using something different then an ipod with lossless files. I'm leaving for college next year and have limited cash, so i cant do an expensive or non-portable(ish) setup. Anybody have any advice?
A good coat of auto paste wax on the bottom of the CD can help too.. Do it just like you were waxing a car.
I haven't tried it but I suspect that liquid polymer they sell to repair scratched plastic eyeglass lenses might work even better than wax.
The only thing that really kills a CD is scratches on the *top* side. As long as you can't see obvious holes in the metal layer when you hold the CD up to the light, generally the data can be gotten back out.
I have the equipment to polish out all but the very worst scratches on the bottom of a CD.
PM me if my suggestions don't work and we can discuss things.

Any way to repair the files?
